From your experiences, what would the group members recommend as the simpliest, most portable beach toys for a 3yo boy? We will come in November and my daughter's 3yo son will have his first trip to the beach. Appreciate suggestions. I have him a small fish net and thought the bucket would be good. I don't want to load him and us up with toys...Thoughts???

A good shovel, a good bucket, and a healthy imagination is all he needs. The net is good, too. Kids that age have the attention span of a gnat so why load him up with tons of stuff!

Scope the beach out for a family that dragged the toy chest to the beach. Set up relatively close. No clean up, no carrying, and tons of toys right there.

You're overthinking this. Bucket and shovel. Ball. You're set!

...a "normal" 3-year-old-sized shovel would be good; please don't turn him loose with one of those Industrial-sized shovels, unless of course he gets a kick out of filling in the holes-to-China other kids have dug up.

I think you're right about traveling light. Just smear him with sunblock and watch him make up his own fun and games with what Mother Nature provides.

I would agree that a bucket and shovel and small fish net would probably do it.

But you will totally rock as "Grandmom of the year" if you provided one of those pushable large yellow plastic dump trucks. Tonka or someone else makes them.

I raised 2 boys on these beaches and the dump truck was the toy of choice....always.

I've seen kids play with sticks and shells for hours, and they are easy enough to find, so that you don't have to lug them to the beach.

Our friend's kid always leaves her big basket of toys lying in the sand and spends her time with one of our cups (from which she has dumped the fruity beverage) and a water bottle (which she swipes off my bike as soon as she arrives).
