to goodwitch-thanks for the tribute

My grandad said that he ate a rat once cause they were hungry while serving in WW?- sorry don't know which one, I was little- not up on history or I would know that.
I just thought that was strange at the time cause I didn't understand why he just couldn't have had a homecooked meal.I thought you ate your meals and then went out to fight and came back in at meal time.
I was getting ready to ask him what it tasted like, but he inserted they ate anything they got their hands on. I guess now I'm wondering why they didn't have some type of provision or had he been separated from his unit or whatever they called it for awhile.
My dad was in Korea and said there was food problems quite often. He was raised during the depression and said sometimes all they ate was turnip greens.
My great grandmother used to feed hobos biscuits during the depression, I think they said hobo, maybe called homeless now, when they would travel down the railroad tracks by her house. She looked very indian.
Its hard to imagine what these scenarios are like or even relate.
I'm sure I'm not as thankful as I should be for what I have and a tribute seems so little, but it is important to remember. Thank you goodwitch for the tribute- it helped me to remember those that serve and the harshness thats involved to keep our country free.
