I was fortunate enough to get to attend a talk tonight involving Sandra Day O'Connor and it was amazing to see how sharp and funny an 80 year old can be. I suppose being on the Supreme Court for 24 years will do that to you. She was incredibly funny and I really felt fortunate to be able to attend.
Something that really stuck out to me was when she was talking about the election of judges. It's no secret to someone who has followed her that she does not believe judges should be elected.
I strongly agree with her position and think that the judiciary should be kept separate from the politics that rule the legislative and executive branches of government.
I live in a state that elects supreme court justices to six year terms as well as elects all lower state courts through popular elections.
I just think that this is a terrible idea.
Here is a link with good samples of both sides of the argument.
