Schoolgirl's birthday cake banned under healthy eating rules - Telegraph

I understand why this sounds SOOOOO Big brother but I get it. Why not have a party at home and have 100 cakes - just don't bring it to school. After all, if there are 30 kids or even 20 in a class that's 20 to 30 times as many cakes over the course of the year. Then there's Easter, Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day and countless other holidays when junk is brought into the classroom. It is very difficult if you are a child who can't eat wheat or sugar, etc... to have to say no while others sit and partake. That's why I think the party should be a private one at home or at a party place.

What do you think?

In the olden days, we didn't have this "bring a cake to school on a kid's birthday"--usually, during recess, our "friends" punched our arm for the number of years ...but we did have great fun celebrating Christmas and Halloween and Easter and Valentines Day without all the PC hub-bub. Personally, I don't remember kids in our schools having anywhere near the amount of allergies and anxiety that seems to plague the kids today. The way teachers dealt with kids having "ADD" was a trip to the principal's office and a note home to "Dad"...the only medications needed--maybe an aspirin to take away the pain of a stinging behind.

While it seems extreme on the surface, it is actually a good policy.

Not only are 20-30 uber-sugary treats or cakes a year an issue, it's time out of class that could be spent learning, it's an allergy issue, and teaching kids hopped up on sugar isn't exactly conducive to high test scores.

Plus THIS school is the focus of a campaign to promote healthy food and eating habits.

Though IMO, there is something going on to make so many kids/adults have such severe allergies.

Geez ... another silly non-story. No offense to you, Gidget, but this is a case of a new school policy being enforced and the woman who obviously is SO VERY PROUD of her cakes is offended and calls the media.

My kids' elementary school doesn't allow birthday cakes or cupcakes period. I'm sure it has to do with disruptions, allergies, healthy eating concerns AND the worry that some kids whose parents don't bring treats to school might feel left out. So much easier just not to allow the stuff. The grandma needs to get a grip.

The whining! I am getting so sick of the whining. And not from the kids either -- they seem like the honest ones.

LOL I thought the same thing - why is the grandma so bent out of shape?? Is this a personal attack on her cake making abilities? There are so many positive things she could be doing with her culinary skills.

Glad to hear I am not the only one who didn't think this was sacrilegious.
