The Shake Shanty, The Village of Baytowne Wharf's newest eatery, held its grand opening celebration Aug. 12.

During the celebration and ribbon cutting with the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce, Shake Shanty doled out samples of the food that hungry diners can expect to find there.

True to its name, The Shake Shanty offers old-fashioned chocolate and vanilla ice cream cones in addition to delectable shakes that can be blended with Oreos, Butterfingers, and more.

But that's not all. Servers offered hamburgers, hotdogs, French fries, onion rings, chicken tenders, and custard treats to sample. The eatery also offers Grayton Beer and wine.

The hamburgers are prepared in the old-fashioned style, made to order with optional lettuce, tomato, onions, ketchup and mustard or mayo. The meat is from Angus ground chuck served on a no trans-fat potato bun.

The hotdogs are natural all-beef dogs also served on a no trans-fat potato bun.

"We wanted this to be an old-fashioned burger joint that serves comfort food at fair prices, and we wanted to do it well," said owner Tom Rice. "We felt a section of the market in The Village was open for a family-friendly casual dining spot with good food for a reasonable price."

Rice also owns Marlin Grill and Jim & Nick's in The Village, which he opened in 2002.

Even though Rice already had enough to keep him busy, he said he enjoys a challenge. He has been in the restaurant business all his life, he said, beginning in the 1980s in Birmingham.

Nestled in the heart of Baytowne Wharf at 117 Cannery Lane, the Shake Shanty offers an inexpensive casual atmosphere with its outdoor dining.
