the author writes a fascinating, vivid story of his life on the run, escaping from an Australian prison to India. His experiences in Bombay and other places in India and surrounding mid east countries, are incredible. The writing is beautiful, and the submersion into Indian cultures is wonderful. the story is autobiographical.

It appears Johnny Depp is to play the lead role in a movie based on the novel, but can't find much recent information about it - release in 2011. I think Russell Crowe would have been a better pick, and was considered in the beginning, but Johnny Depp was really into India and the novel.. and ended up with the role.

I wanted to mention this book because its one of the few novels that you search and wait to find and then finally after a very long wait it lands in your hands. Thanks Sun Dog Books for recommending it. I'll be in search for other India-based historical fiction novels.

OOOOOOh thanks Tootsie this sounds right up my alley and a movie to boot! I bet JD will be really good, but I haven't read about the character. Russell Crow I love too!!!! I will get this book soon!
