Skunky- Dr. Question!

New posts
Have you ever heard of the Master Cleanser? Cayenne pepper, lemon, water and syrup? I feel like I need to cleanse. What are your thoughts on this before I commit to not eating for 10 days.:yikes:

We've been making and selling maple syrup for 20 years. We live in a touristy area much like SoWal, but in Vermont, so we see a lot of people. We've been asked so frequently about "the Master Cleanser diet" that I contacted the University of Vermont's maple research center and requested nutritional info that I could pass along to our customers who were insisting that this book recommended grade B syrup because of its health benefits. There are only trace minerals and trace vitamins present in any grade of maple syrup, and one grade of syrup is no more beneficial than another.

I would listen to the folks prescribing common sense, care, and moderation.

Gotta run wicked thunderstorm!

Do you have a fave?:idontno:

Most of the time, I make my own green drink from fresh organic kale, spinach, parsley, celery, chard, and beet tops.

For ease and time limitations, I will mix either Dr.Schulzes Super Food (a powdered mix of over 50 vegetables and fruits) with apple juice or Greens + another powdered form of veggies with apple juice.

Knudsen also makes a nice bottled drink called Mega Green that taste pretty good.

Foe ease,

Thanks Kurt...

Rachel and I have done many cleanse programs over the years. We still do full body cleansing with the changes of the seasons (4 times a year). My biggest advice for a first timer would be to consult with your qualified health care professional. Make sure the timing is right, ie: blood pressure issues, diabetis and or blood sugar issues or other problems.

The Master cleanse is an old school cleanse if you will. There are many newer programs that I have had better success with.

When we cleanse, we listen to our bodies... So many people will say, "do this for ten days and only drink this..." Horse poop. I have gone through a cleanse for as long as 24 days when I set out to do 5 days and I have also gone less than 24 hours when I intended to do 7-10 days. Yes, a cleanse can and often does make you feel bad as you are eliminating waste, however if you are feeling as if your world is going to end, eat something.

Before we start we tend to go raw for 3-4 days. Fresh salads with lots of greens, avocado, sprouts, sprouted beans, ext... This tends to help get the body in a pre-cleanse state and makes the cleanse easier.

When we finish the cleanse, we ease back into a food diet by doing the same with the fresh salads, ext..

Some staples that we keep handy when going through a cleanse are: avocados-a good source of protein and fats, apples, cashews, almonds (sprouted) and carrots. Once again, listen to your body, if it is miserable, eat an avo or something.

Thats my take on cleansing. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the insight! I have a lot of friends who started this, wanted to do it for 5 days, and did it for 20 something. So I feel like if they can handle it, I can do it, right?

Will it make me violently sick? I don't want to come to work if I'm going to be throwing up.

And what is the process of coming off of the cleanse?

Explain to me, and I'm not being flip here...
Don't we have kidneys and other organs that cleanse toxins for us?
What do these diets do that our bodies cannot do?

There is no way doing the described "cleanse" for 20 days is healthy!

Don't mess with Mother Nature - anything that makes your body feel bad is not good for you!!! Discomfort and pain are your body telling you something is wrong not "toxins" leaving. Your body is constantly getting rid of toxins without discomfort - that's why you sweat, pee, and poo.

If you are not feeling 100% well and feel the need to do something proactive I am SURE your physician can recommend a variety of things including a change to a healthier diet. Just because someone on Sowal hasn't had major health problems from doing it doesn't mean it's safe.

Peaboy is a pro who has experience with hundreds of other bodies in addition to his own. If mother nature was the only thing going into our bodies we might not need to bother.

LadyJ - our organs sometimes do not function properly. And then there is the matter of overload, and of pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, flavorings, additiives .. . . . . . If you can't pronounce the ingredients in 99% of grocery products, neither can your kidneys.

Often our organs don't function properly because we have damaged them through fad diets or extreme "health" treatments!

I am just urging moderation, caution, and consulting qualified professionals (in person) before any drastic dietary changes.

Sorry so late arriving to the party. Since you asked about cleansing, I think Kurt pointed you in the right direction asking for Peaboy's input. We were taught that colon(and GI in general) cleansing is an ineffective, age old practice. I am not familiar with one shred of evidence that 'cleansing' does anything other than make you poop like crazy...I don't claim to know everything, just have been taught to practice evidence-based medicine, and the objective evidence for cleansing does not exist. But it certainly seems to satisfy a psychological need in many to sit on the toilet, so if it floats your boat, go for it. Just be careful what you use-buy your stuff from Peaboy or someone of equally good repute:biggrin:

Here is a simple blurb on the topic courtesy of the Mayo minds http://www.mayoclinic.com/print/colon-cleansing/AN00065/METHOD=print

Thanks for ALL the advice! Looks like I'm going to move forward with the cleansing. A couple of girls in my office are going to do it too. I'll be stocking up on baby wipes for this journey. Wish me luck, and if you're all lucky, I won't share any of the gorey details!
