AOL plants roots in people's puters (registries) like weeds. I would go into your Remove Programs, and uninstall everything AOL related. Then also download Bob's registry cleaner and run that.
It will fix registry problems caused by other factors as well, but should clean up any changes that aol made to your registry affecting your computer that isn't removed from uninstalling aol.
The only thing I have AOl related is instant messenger (which I hardly use) and I do not allow the updates, I just use the basic IM program occasionally. You can download instant messenger for free without having to have aol. (if you use it)
