Snapper at $20.00!

I never thought that I would see the day that snapper would hit $20/lb. I was at Goatfeather yesterday and that was the asking price. ugh...

Not blaming anyone. I know fuel prices are driving all of the seafood cost up. My concern is that with the seafood prices continuing to skyrocket we will see the beginning of the end of the local fishermen. IMO the cost will reduce the number of sales thus slowing the market and profits for the industry....

I would certainly hate to see that happen....

Perhaps. Then explain why the Grouper, Pompano etc. are all in the mid teens. The fishmonger (luv that term) advised me that it was associated with the fuel cost and it will only get worse....

Recreational fishing bag limits was recently reduced by half, and the Feds shortened the season for catching Red Snapper, Federal waters being 9 miles offshore. The bag limits have decreased because the population of Red Snapper has dwindled. When the supply decreases, the price increases.

I was incorrect to say that the price has "nothing" to do with fuel prices. Yes, fuel prices have increased two times in the last two years, and if you think it is pricey at the pump, you should see the marina prices. Diesel is higher priced than Premium Fuel.

As luck would have it, I was in Pensacola yesterday, swung by Joe Pattis Seafood Market and picked up some flappin' fresh snapper at $10.49(!) a pound....made for a fantastic dinner tonite. It shouldn't come as a surprise that we pay a pretty high premium for just about everything in this 'hood.

The problem w/ the red snapper limits is that they aren't very fair - I go out deep sea fishing and can only catch a couple fish - then stand on the dock and watch as the commercial fisherman bring in giant baskets full.

You want a fuel price reality check, watch a marine gas pump. Hundreds going through that hose!

You also have to remember Goatfeather's and Shrimper's competition around here -- WaterCooler Publix, where everything is pricey due to the cost of shipping the seafood from Indonesia to NW FL.

I don't understand. The guys who work behind the fish counter at WaterCooler Publix have told me on more than one occasion that their shrimp was coming from Indonesia. All I'm saying is that with only two seafood markets in town, and WC Publix being expensive, the local seafood places can charge more because their competitors also charge more. No one peed in my shrimp, except for maybe some drunken fishermen or some crabs.
