I always thought that we would really have something if the walls of the interior of our homes were painted with a solar paint technology. Then, we could pay for the energy used to start the lights, but then the light would be self-generating.

Too bad that would make it a perpetual machine which don't exist...:dunno:

Saw this the other day. Seems like an incredible idea.

So, instead of giving 30 billion to Goldman Sachs to develop a "carbon credit trading system" for them to make a gabillion dollars, why aren't we investing in real companies, with real technologies, that can work right now?

Because they don't contribute to Congress the way GS does?

Actually the company is fully capitalized and isn't taking new investors. This is one IPO I'll be going after. It's patented technology, but they aren't going to gouge the public to use it. I'm sure the oil and coal folks are thrilled over this technology. :D

While it would need energy to start the process it would basically absorb back ambient light which you could use to lower the amount of electricity you are purchasing. It would also work during the day. I don't use any lights on a sunny day as there is plenty streaming in. The paint, in this example, would be using that to produce electricity which I could use for my laptop, a/c, etc. or sell back to the grid.

The most efficient solar panel technology is currently about 17%, most commercially produced panels are in the 10 - 11% range, and is uber expensive. Once you consider the additional losses of the wiring, inverter and storage batteries in the system the concept of using a solar panel to produce it's own self sustaining source of energy isn't possible.

The guru's at FSEC have been working on thin film and other applications for years. When I was there in April I was amazed at the possibilities for solar. In the next 5 - 20 years they expect huge gains in the solar field based on emerging technologies for building integrated products like paint, membranes, roof tiles, etc.

I think the energy companies should be working on ways to harness lightning, which has the potential to provide plenty of power for the nation, without consuming non-renewable resources.
