Many people in the Midwest/Northern part of the country find the heat and humidity of this area completely unbearable in the summer.

They tend to go north or to water to find cooler temps.

IMO they are more likely to come here during the spring, fall, and winter - especially for events like MountainFilm and Songwriters.

Unless you live in the Southeast, going to Florida for a summer beach vacation just does not compute. It'll take a lot more than an airport to get the Boston crowd to come here instead of Cape Cod or Maine, just like it'll take a similar amount of effort to pry the Chicago set away from Saugatuck and Charlevoix.

Once they see the beaches they'll come like locusts. I have yet to see a hypodermic on the beaches here.

Can't say I ever remember seeing trash or medical waste along the Lake Michigan coast, and hate to say it, I'd take an August day in Saugatuck, Grand Haven, or New Buffalo over an August day in Grayton or Seaside every time. Michigan Augusts are like those perfect October days we get down here.

also, some locals agree and would LOVE to go north for July-Sept (me). The rest of the year here is nearly perfect. There are many many northern and midwest places I would love to explore and spend whole summers getting to know - there is much beauty to find in little places all over. Maine is definitely at the top of my list to visit.
