This was something that should never have happened. Stem cell research is too important to be governed by politics. The research is need to promote cures of many different ailments. It should be funded regardless of the funding resource. It was a serious mistake on the part of the Bush administration to restrict stem cell research as they did.

This is one thing President Bush accomplished that I was very disappointed in. I look forward to the reversal.

Yeah - I thought it was written as a $250K 'grant' per year, but not clear if that money had been banned in recent years or not.

I am a huge proponet for Stem Cell Research and this type of medical advancement. Most medical research is usually advanced and successful as a result by being funded by private dollars, so when Bush capped the funding amount, I wasn't terribly concerned as in GA, three facilities were well ahead of the game and would have spent $250K in about a minute.

It seems I also remember Bush talking about a complete ban on aborted fetuses being used in stem cell research. That falls under the individual's rights on her own body, IMHO, etc.......anyone else remember this? It was 2001 and was before 9.11.01 - I am just not recalling all points covered.

Side note:

Right after this speech from Bush in 2001, a Dem GF, who has juvenile diabetes, drinks at least a bottle of wine/day and is on a pump for insulin said, "Bush is going to kill me."

Didn't even go there with her - she needed to believe that to get through her day and that was that......but, not very rational, I thinks.

traderx, do you really think that any of the pharma companies are going to invest in stem cell research? Doubtful, they prefer a band aid approach instead of a cure. It's more profitable to sell someone a pill a day for the rest of their lives as opposed to a one time cure.

Not Merck and Pfizer but read the article I posted the link to. Small start-up companies typically pioneer research.

Not just the big pharma, entire industries are totally dependent on treatments rather than cures. Doctors, labs, nurses, treatment centers.. they have a vested interest in seeing people remain sick. Cancer treatment is probably one of the best examples.

That pioneering research wouldn't be possible if it weren't for a base data set from research conducted in university labs.

I tend to disagree with that. The executives that run chains of Dialysis clinics and Cancer treatment centers do, but I can guarantee that anyone working the front lines would slap you silly. I think 99% of all nurses, doctors, and even aides would much prefer to be unemployed than watch the suffering that cancer and kidney patients go through.

Here is the sad part. It wasn't governed by politics, it was governed by one man's relgious beliefs and forced on all of us.

KEEP RELIGION OUT OF POLITICS!
