Went to bed early and didn't get to see the rest of the game, but they looked a little rough against UCF. May be a very long year. He looked happy though before kickoff. In his element. I was glad to see that.
Have collected a few Spurrier stories over the years, but the best one is this: My husband's dad got Steve his first coaching job. Steve was bumming around the golf course in Gainesville one day after his NFL career was over, and my father in law Henry asked him what he was going to do. Somehow they got on the subject of coaching, and Henry called his good friend Doug Dickey and got him a job as an assistant. This was '78 so it must have been when Dickey was AD. Anyway, he was QB coach at UF that year, and then moved on to Georgia Tech in '79 (got fired that year).
It was an inauspicious beginning, as Spurrier was not recognized as a genius (oops, sorry, mastermind) right away, but Spurrier was always keen on crediting Henry with getting him started. My in-laws went to Spurrier's 50th birthday party a decade ago, and Spurrier was very gracious to both of them, which meant a lot because Henry was quite ill.
When Henry died two months later, Spurrier called Mike Bianchi and told him the story, and Bianchi wrote about it for the Gainesville Sun. Whatever you can say about Spurrier, he is a loyal guy, and is capable of being very, very classy.
