Obviously, I don't believe any organization is homogenous. Many if not most Tea Partiers are not racist, but the do tolerate racist posters and rhetoric at their events. The NAACP passed a resolution asking the groups to repudiate racists in their ranks.

Here is what Tea Party leader Mark Williams posted on his blog in response:

Dear Mr. Lincoln

We Colored People have taken a vote and decided that we don't cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!

In fact we held a big meeting and took a vote in Kansas City this week. We voted to condemn a political revival of that old abolitionist spirit called the 'tea party movement'.

The tea party position to "end the bailouts" for example is just silly. Bailouts are just big money welfare and isn't that what we want all Coloreds to strive for? What kind of racist would want to end big money welfare? What they need to do is start handing the bail outs directly to us coloreds! Of course, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the only responsible party that should be granted the right to disperse the funds.

And the ridiculous idea of "reduce[ing] the size and intrusiveness of government." What kind of massa would ever not want to control my life? As Coloreds we must have somebody care for us otherwise we would be on our own, have to think for ourselves and make decisions!

The racist tea parties also demand that the government "stop the out of control spending." Again, they directly target Colored People. That means we Colored People would have to compete for jobs like everybody else and that is just not right.

Perhaps the most racist point of all in the tea parties is their demand that government "stop raising our taxes." That is outrageous! How will we Colored People ever get a wide screen TV in every room if non-coloreds get to keep what they earn? Totally racist! The tea party expects coloreds to be productive members of society?

Mr. Lincoln, you were the greatest racist ever. We had a great gig. Three squares, room and board, all our decisions made by the massa in the house. Please repeal the 13th and 14th Amendments and let us get back to where we belong.

Sincerely

Precious Ben Jealous, Tom's Nephew National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Head Colored Person

I think that HE thinks his piece is a satire. In his mind it's the NAACP shouting down Lincoln... but it doesn't work because the NAACP wasn't around then, and the tea party movement is happening today.... and people don't call blacks "Colored People" today.... and the thing with slavery being "a good deal"? I have no idea how that's follows the line of his satire... anyway, I tried to figure it out, but I'm lost... He's a knucklehead...

Looks like the Tea Party is way overdue for a new leader. Surely the sane ones among the group will give that guy a swift kick out.

I have trouble believing that he actually wrote that. Definitely an eye-opener!

Is "The Tea Party" a party? Does it have a "Leader"?

I'd be surprised if most of the people who came to Tea Party protests have a clue who this guy is.

But where is their statement on The New Black Panthers?.............. Oh wait they're not racist?

I love that little Palin girl and I also attended a tea party back in Denver before I moved here. I got to meet her. It was a shame she and John didn't take on Mr. Obama a little stronger than they did, They might have won. This junk that was put out was likely meant in jest, jest that went very wrong...very wrong in deed. As an old lady who has seen a lot, and is new to Sowal, calling folks racists is the best way to split up folks... I think we all have some biases in our makup and sometimes no matter how hard we try it slips out...no matter what color our skin is...we just need to accept this as being a human flaw and then move on and not dwell on it. Hope I haven't made my post too long. This is my second post. I just joined today. Hi everybody!
