Since this recent outbreak of Red Tide, I have been reading and researching this issue extensively.
It is encouraging to know that satellite imaging can help detect suspicious red tide blooms. Also, water tests are available but there is no local site that does these advanced tests and the water samples are often sent from Panama city to South Florida.
There is much research being done on Red tide and there is an organization that has designed a torpedo like machine that automatically samples water off the coast where blooms are suspected. This torpedo can be remotely guided to locations where satellite imagery shows supicious blooms and can radio back results.
However, there is much research that still needs to be done. Easier, faster assays for Red tide that involve air sampling would also be helpful. Since this growing problem is likely to continue affecting our community, I propose that a research site be created between Panama City and Destin to investigate this issue.
Our community has long been seeking to attract high tech businesses to the area. A research center in the area would be a good boost to the local community.
Any individuals having a strong interest and ability to help start such a venture can feel free to contact me regarding this.
Meanwhile, I will post some information on how to control the bothersome symptoms on a separate posting.
