If you've not had a chance to read the article...in the Jan/Feb issue of Coastal Living on pages 78 - 81 there is an article on The Cove on Eleuthera...in the Bahamas. www.thecoveeleuthera.com

Co-Owned by locals George and Ann Hartley and Scott and Leslie Bumpas...this place absolutely beautiful. Gordie and I have first hand knowledge as we spent a week there last January. It was a much needed break for both of us.....The Cove is a great place to escape....and do...nothing ;) Just a short drive to Harbour Island!

Eleuthera is a small island and there are several other locals who own homes there. It's a great place to explore by car....it truly was an interesting experience driving the roads (if you can call some of them that) of the island....

Kudos to George, Ann, Leslie and Scott for doing such a great job at The Cove. I can't wait to return!

Looks beautiful. This was on our list a few years ago but we opted for the Abacos instead. Still would love to visit Eleuthera.

I just read the article this evening while in Barnes & Noble! I've always wanted to visit Eleuthera, maybe some day. Sure hope whenever I make it there, I run into Lenny Kravitz... ;-)

The Cove is apparently a very nice place, but looks a little pricey to this old country boy.:D

Eleuthra is a very neat place, very undeveloped and laid back. We have been there a couple of times and really enjoy the miles and miles of unoccupied beaches. There is a neat (sort of) web site, www.eleu.net that has a lot of information on the place. Development is heading thier way and you need ot enjoy it in the next few years before the place looks like Atlantic City or worse. You can get a small cottage for $1000 to $1500 a week, big enough for two or a small family.

seaside2, do you mind saying where you stayed and the best areas to stay in. I'd be looking for good beaches mainly, but would need places to eat etc also . but don't want crowds or tourist stuff. Just beaches etc.

Stayed at the Rainbow Inn the first time and a cottage called La Sable Rose the second. Check them out on the www.eleu.net web site. Register, ask questions, etc. Getting there is a pain. Went Bahama Air into Nassau the first time, seems like it took three days, but was really just one really long day.

Took Timm Air the second. Better:dunno:

Prople there are different at the least. Read through the posts and you'll see what I mean. Remember, you are there for a quiet vacation, not to get tied up in their politics, etc. Harbour Island is the most developed part of the island. Pricey resorts, hotels, food, shopping. We like to drive to the different beaches with our cooler and chairs and see what is out there. They have plenty of beaches, mostly uninhabited (and some uninhibited, if you know what I mean;-)).

Gasoline is exhorbitant, the food is too high, some of the waiters are terrible, etc (Kind of like here on the mainland). But the most and best beaches around. The total marginal cost over Sowal, etc ain't that much, if any. Local fishermen sell their catch daily, there are a number of fish fries on Friday nights, a few local bars, but mostly just folks trying to survive.

Only warning: No Seeums are everywhere and bite the he!! out of you. Bring about 10 gallons of the strongest Deet you can buy along with enough Benadryl to drown a cow.

Eleuthera is a beautiful place and I hope to see it soon. Just read a book about the Bahamas and how far they have come since their independance. Development is everywhere but it seems the p.m. is taking it serious - especially for the large developments. :clap:Bakers Bay, on the North end of Great Guana Cay had many people worried about the fertilizer water running off into the water and damaging the reefs. I hope that the steps that the developers are putting into recycling the water works b/c it would kill the diving/snorkeling industry down there.

CP, I believe that many of the islands you can find a nice quiet beach. It just depends on what island and where you stay on the island. If you want a resort then you have people, no matter what but check VRBo.com and you should find some houses that you can rent on many islands....
