When you watch Rififi, you see how so many later heist movies took from it.
Mermaid, how did you like that corny song and dance number? Cracked me up.

Cil, I am red in the face but I don't remember it! It took me a whole week just to recall the name of this movie. Ever since we got Netflix we've become movie fiends and they're all starting to run together. What really sticks in my mind in Rififi is those two characters (no spoiler; I won't say who what where or when ;-) ) getting their throats cut. That was chilling. For all that movies today have excessive violence, it's Hollywood fake violence that doesn't shock you to the core like that or make your heart pound in horror. And it was a fairly simple scene, too, which made it remarkable to me.

That's okay--it was towards the beginning and was a short sequence. They were in a nightclub or something like that.
You are probably aware that they are doing a remake of Rififi. (I have a feeling they'll leave the brief musical element out--or perhaps modernize it into hip-hop! ;-))
Another famous French heist movie is The Red Circle. (Le Cercle Rouge.)
The dreamy Alain Delon is in it, along with Yves Montand.
It is a French gangster movie from 1970. Supposedly it was first written back in the 50's, but held back after Rififi came out. As I recall, some suspension of disbelief is required for certain plot twists; on the other hand, several of the stunts were done by the actors themselves in real-time--no computer tricks for this film.
Another famous (and influential) French gangster movie (remember, I have a son who is a French major) is Le Samourai. (More dreamy Alain!)
It is a noirish thriller, about the loneliness of a hit man. It is character driven but very absorbing.
Did you (or anyone else out there) see the much more recent Man On A Train? It is a trading places movie; a teacher yearns for a more exciting life, a gangster would like a quieter existance. There is a lot of symbolism that goes way over my head but I enjoyed the plot as well as the alternate fantasy ending.
Johnny Hallyday, who plays the gangster, is an aging rock star who was huge in Europe (in his heyday, Jimi Hendrix was billed second to him!) He later got into acting and I think he does a great job here.

For those of you who have not yet seen Run Lola Run, pay special attention to the soundtrack (it will be hard NOT to.) It's one of the best. I play it regularly when I'm running up against a hard deadline.

This movie was mentioned a few times throughout this thread, and I just now finally got around to watching it.

WOW!!!!!:clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1:

And you're not kidding about the soundtrack either! I played the music video first while making a sandwich, getting ready to watch the movie, so I listened and was dancing in my kitchen, not watching the screen, which is good, due to a few spoilers in the video.
Then I watched the movie. Then I watched it again.
Then I replayed the music video. I played it again. And again. I may have to order this soundtrack!

Recommended viewing in the 'extras' was "Orlando" which looked very good. Has anyone seen that?

Let's get this thread up and going again, now that we are done with our Valentines, we should have some time!

Another great soundtrack is Hans Zimmer's Blackhawk Down (good movie too).

I'm adding an indy movie that I've watched a couple of times - Bully.
It's disturbing view of a group of bored, lazy Florida teens with very little ambition other than using drugs and engaging in a lot of sex. It's very graphic and pretty raw - not for the faint of heart. They murder the "leader" (Nick Stahl). Based on a true story. I found myself thinking about it for several days.

I have not seen Orlando but I love the lead actress,Tilda Swinton. Also, I didn't realize it's taken from a Virgina Woolf novel. could be interesting.

Take it with a grain of salt, but my mother (a confirmed Italiano-phile of the highest order) called to say she thought this was an engrossing thriller. I haven't watched it yet.

Good Morning, Night http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377569/
