These candidates were not chosen because they were Realtors? (Realtors dont "play favorites") or because they were incumbents or because they were life long residents of any area or region, rather they were chosen by Realtors who were looking for certain criteria. Among the criteria considered were:

  • The candidate?s real estate knowledge and business philosophy.
  • Any past actions taken on issues.
  • The degree of experience and electability.
  • In the case of the incumbent ? voting history and committee seniority.
U.S. Representative, District 1 ? Jeff Miller

Florida State Representative, District 5 ? Brad Drake

Walton Board of County Commissioners, District 3 - Larry Jones

Walton County School Superintendent - Carlene Anderson

Walton County School Board, District 1 - Robert Nelson
Walton County School Board, District 4 - Mark Davis

I would like to point out that not all Realtors necessarily recommend those particular candidates. Realtors elect a Board of Directors for ECAR (Emerald Coast Association of Realtors). The Board of Directors for ECAR are the ones who endorse these candidates. I can tell you that I often disagree with the Board.

I find it rather interesting that I am agreeing with at least four of their choices, while I remain undecided on the remaining two. I also find it interesting that they won't speak up and endorse a candidate for District 5 Walton County Commissioner. That may be the most important seat in the election.

What is their rationale for not endorsing a Candidate for Dist. 5? Just curious.

I completely agree with ya SJ.

I personally don't like being a member of something in which they announce who they are endorsing which in turn looks like a majority of their members endorse that person also.

I just emailed them from the letter that I received via email. Lets see what the answer is.... well, that was very quick! The board was at a deadlock for endorsements. Half wanted to endorse Robert "Bob" Hudson while the other half wanted to endorse Alan Osborne. I was told that to be democratic about it that they decided not to endorse either since the board could not agree on just one.

I will add that I think it was great for ECAR to sponsor Meet the Candidates for Okaloosa and Walton Counties. The meetings were well-attended and open to the public, and very balanced and professional. I do hope ECAR will continue to be involved in our local elections, by continuing to have open forums like they held this year.

Let me also extend a thanks to the ECAR for the forum. A question for those associated with ECAR -

Why no recommendation for District 5 or the Sheriff? I see the explanation in this thread that District 5 was basically tied within the organization. Is this correct? And, if so, is the same true for the sheriff's race?

These are the two most contested races, and I am sure many would like to see a pick made.

They did not interview for the Sheriff. I was told that usually all they do are County Commissioners. They decided to get involved in the school district races this year. Cliff Long is the governmental affairs guy for the organization. He can be contacted via email, "Cliff Long" <cliff@ecaor.com>.

Do you really believe this? Are you familiar with all the lists that one can pay to be included in as "the best of the best", i.e. academic achievement, legal representatives, et al? If you have followed the news, the local bloggers, the local internet chat boards over the past decade you would realize that some of these "endorsed" candidates have not been supportive of many of what everyone now seems to see as the progress in the south end of Walton, especially in the school system. I would say that all that money given to professional perception managers or campaign managers that don't even live in this county has certainly paid off for certain candidates.

Which "certain" candidates?
