Uncle Timmy...isn't most or all of the oil in Iraq located in the north along with the Kurds?

Most of the oil in Iraq is located outside of Sunni-dominated regions, including a large field near Kirkuk in the Kurdish north.

Don't quote me on this, I don't have time to do a lot of fact checking but it seems to me there are some problems with the Kirkuk field -ie poor quality crude oil.

All oil is not created equal, believe it or not. Some regions produce an extremely light clean crude -(the Saudi Ghawar field being the gold standard) and other fields have poorer quality crude that makes it difficult to pump and refine. I think the Kurdish fields are considered a low grade source.

Probably more than you wanted to know, but yes -there is oil in Iraq's Kurdish north. The remainder is located around the Persian Gulf region, in ****e dominated territory.

Lol, the 'dirty word' filter edited my post.

That was supposed to read "Shi-ite" dominated territory.

Thanks for a well thought out response Uncle T. It is refreshing to hear somebody proposing solutions rather than ruminating the obvious. Did you hatch this plan yourself or is somebody out there pushing for this?

 I didn't see you put out a plan of action Dr. Small Box.
Besides, the thread was debating Friedman's logic and there not being a major attack on US soil.

It hasn't happened yet, but believe me, they are just waiting patiently, and I did read a survey somewhere that a large percentage of American's feel it's only a matter of time. That there's a strong possibility it will be within the next 5 years.

Perhaps you should have started another thread. You've been good at that lately. :D

Scary, but this is an all Uncle Timmy generated plan.

Well, at least the overall plan. I have listened to various proposals, ie the Saudi Peace Proposal and added them in to what I think is my best take on where to go from here.

Please don't think I'm happy about a lot of what I am proposing. Re-installing the Sunni run civil service and military has some VERY ugly consequences, but it is a statement on how bad the current situation and the scale of the problem Bush has gotten us into.

So Timmy, if we pay them to no longer terroize us, want the US Fed Gov't and therefore all US taxpayers, be considered as helping terrorists, and thereby our entire country be in breach of US Law? Sounds just like the story of the US Banana companies paying off terrorists in South America to "protect" their field workers. Practical, perhaps, but in violation of US Law. :dunno:

Yeah, I think I have sent this thread on a bit of a tangent.

But I did start out by commenting on the Freidman article; and nothing has yet changed my mind that America's Energy-Achille's Heal represents a far greater potential threat to our national security than terrorism.

And so, the justification for Iraq, based on terrorism issues (as Freidman does) is mute if you conclude that a) Our dependance on the uninterupted flow of foreign oil is our primary national security and b) the Iraq War has destabilized and threatens the source of that oil.
