It's pretty in pictures, but that's a bit scary.
That would be a tale of survival in everyday life!
I'm amazed, how in the world do you live there.
Siberia in America.
Everyday stories?

I know it looks dreadful, but the people are very happy to live in this beautiful place. There are lots of tough Norwegian people in the area. They hunt & fish on the beautiful lakes & rivers. You can view the eagles souring along Lake Superior's water front from mountain views in the summer. BTW: Summer is short. It's not for everyone. Here's a web site from Michigan Tech. College for their Winter Festival. I think it's ??www.mtu.edu/carnival/index.php

I remember going up one winter to visit our son in college, you had to drive around the wild bears, moose, etc using the cleared off roadway as their personal walkway.

Tom
BTW: Our summer place is in Petoskey MI the upper part of the lower pennisular, half way in MI. No more U.P for me.

Michigan but someday in SoWal as well
Wow, Tom. That's beautiful (and scary). As someone who lives in Southeastern Michigan, I can say that it seems like EVERYONE around here goes "up north" for summer vacation. This year, I, too, hope to get "up north" for a little while. But, I wanted to get a vacation home in SoWal rather than up north because I wanted the warmth especially in the winter. The Michigan snow and scenery is beautiful, even in a small city, it's pretty stunning. But the cold really gets to me.

Petoskey is supposed to be beautiful, too. Lucky you to be living there. Would that be a good place for a couple to go for a long weekend in the winter? If so, do you have any recommendations for romantic places to stay (I love being near water, even in the winter), eat, and things to do?

And is the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island worth it?

oh Tom it looks and sounds so beautiful. I wish I could handle living in a place like that - I don't think I have it in me but I just know it would be well worth the challenge. thanks for sharing your beautiful corner of the world.

Tom, I keep looking at your first photo. What kind of plow would have been used to carve that path? It is an amazing photo. But what a mess this road will be once it begins to melt. Wouldn't want to be driving thru there then!

My perfect beach
Tom, I just realized that my previous post might be construed as derogatory, and I assure you that was not my intent. But it does not look like a place for sissies :)wave:) or die-hard southerners :)wave:) or anyone who thinks anything below 50 degrees is cold :)wave: again, but I repeat myself). I bet there are some beautiful winterscapes, though.

Thanks for posting!

Paula,
Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, Boyne, area is truly a midwest secrete for summer vacagtioner's. It's like SoWal being discovered by the masses. We bought up there over 20-yrs ago and fell in love with the area. If your interested in a romantic weekend click on to this web site www.staffords.com and go to the Perry Hotel for special packages. The 1899 hotel is downtown in the gas light district and take the cheapest room because they are all excellent. You will like the creaky floors & old world charm with ammenities offered. You can walk to everything downtown and they sometimes give shopping money in the package. Be sure to go to the City Park Grill a few blocks away where Ernest Hemmingway hung out with his buds drinking etc. Lots of history and the beautiful carved wood bar is outstanding. The food is good too. If you call them direct they sometimes will discount more than the package on the web site. There are other up or down $$ places to stay in the area, but you can't beat the Perry Hotel.

Tom
BTW: MissCritter. You didn't offend me, Cold is ok, but warm SoWal is better.

Thanks, Tom. I will definitely look into the Perry Hotel. It looks wonderful online. It's 4 hours away from Ann Arbor so it would be a two night stay.
