Up the hill from the Gateway Arch
I just heard today that his 18-year-old son committed suicide. I've always thought Tony Dungy seemed like such a great guy and coach; one of my favorites. I just can't imagine the holidays for his family now.
Mermaid, how are the fans in Indianapolis reacting?

Peapod, it's so sad I can't even tell you. It was front page news here that James had committed suicide. I cried reading it--James was the same age as my son Alex, almost to the month. They went to different high schools but Indianapolis is so small that every kid either knows the next one or knows of him so they all have friends in common. That's the way it was with the Coach's son. Losing James is a personal thing to us here and it puts a big hole in our hearts. I feel really empty about it. That poor, poor child.

WOW. Very sad. My 9 yr old son and I heard about this on SportsCenter this morning.

Tough for a family at anytime and especially around the holidays.

I thought of you immediately, Mermaid. Just as I thought of you when the Colts lost their first game, but that seems so small in comparison now. As much as I like Coach Dungy, I can't even imagine what it's like for those of you who are so much closer to the family.

I tell you one thing, when Alex walks in the door today, I'm hugging him extra hard.

Here in Tampa, people are just crushed. Perhaps the only sports figure more beloved in this area than Dungy is Warrick Dunn (who every year gets single mothers in this area a new home for the holidays). It is just heartbreaking. I cannot even imagine what the family is going through right now. Hopefully the outpouring of support will ease a little bit of this unimaginable burden. :sosad:

Yesterday was a very sad day.

TFT, I pray you're right. Just talking to you and Mermaid proves to me that he has really made a positive impact on the people in the cities where he has coached. So it does really sound like people will really extend their support to him and his family.

After watching the news unfold on ESPN it appears that he(Tony) me be the most loved and respected person in the National Football League. Definitely a class act.

Tony is a class act. I'm from Minnesota and Tony has plenty of history in this state and is loved here as he is in Tampa, Indianapolis and elsewhere.
Keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers this Christmas season.
