FDA Proposes Labels Listing Insect-Based Dye

You could be eating crushed up bugs and not even know it, but the F-D-A thinks you should.
January 30th, 2006 @ 12:39pm

A new proposal from the Food and Drug Administration, would require Food and Cosmetic labels to list red dyes called "cochineal extract" or "carmine."

These are extracts made from ground up bodies of a beetle-like insect. The red dyes are used in some ice creams, maraschino cherries, even lipstick.

FDA's proposal was prompted by dozens of reports of hypersensitivity to the colorings.

CCK:

I read this when it came out and now read labels (it's in candy, juice, and other things our family likes to eat) to see if it says "red dye" (I think it has to be on the label, though people don't know it refers to a bug).

yech...

I've always tried my best to avoid any foods with food coloring; I don't care what color it is! It appears I was right to follow my instincts.

I won't pass on red lipstick, though. ;-)

This could be useful information to Vegetarians. Seriously. If I chose to not eat/kill animals, I, too, would want to be informed.
