MIAMI, Fla. (WMBB) – Tropical Storm Barry has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in southern Louisiana as early as Saturday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The system began as a low pressure system over land and formed into Tropical Storm Barry Thursday morning. The storm is heading west at about 5 miles per hour expected to hit southern Louisiana with 15 to 20 inches of rain. This is the second tropical cyclone in the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. The first was subtropical storm Andrea.
Though the panhandle isn’t the direct target of Tropical Storm Barry, double red beach flags will still be waving in Bay, Gulf and Walton counties through the weekend. High surf and small craft advisories are in effect over the Gulf on the western portion of the panhandle until Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Breezy conditions along the coastline will make an appearance Friday afternoon with wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour. Seas will reach 6 to 9 feet by Thursday evening and increase to 7 to 10 feet by Friday and many areas will likely see added rainfall.
The 13 First Alert Storm Team will be monitoring this situation and updates will be posted here and on our social media accounts.
