An earlier story in the paper contained this information:

Investigators questioned 29-year-old Shawn Wuertley, a guard at the Sandpiper Beacon Beach Resort, then released him without realizing he was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Indiana.

Monday afternoon, police were ready to charge Wuertley with attempted felony murder, sexual battery and false imprisonment, but could not find him. Wuertley called police to say he was leaving the state to visit family in Tennessee and would be back Wednesday.

?The indication was that he would talk to us then,? said Maj. Dave Humphreys of the Panama City Beach Police Department. ?The concern is that he?s trying to get a couple days? head start.? <And I thought I was "Master of the Obvious">

Various Internet profiles indicate he may have been married at one time to a woman in Indiana named Shelly ? he has that name tattooed on the side of his neck:shock: ? and has a son.

He said investigators did not run a criminal history check on Wuertley until after he was released. That?s when investigators discovered the Indiana arrest warrant on a burglary charge.

Indiana Department of Correction records show Wuertley has an extensive criminal history including convictions for burglary, escape, auto theft and receiving stolen property.

He was sentenced in Bay County in 1998 to probation on shoplifting and marijuana possession charges.

Incredible!

Why is it that so many security guards have sketchy backgrounds? Hiring off duty officers is the only way to go if you give a damn about your customers and your business, and even that is not a guarantee.

It is a shame that such an incident happened.

Because sketchy characters look for positions with freedom, authority, and access to the things they want to steal/abuse/etc.

Because the pay is horrible and the conditions seem to attract the weird ones. If you are a security guard you have to keys to everyone's residence.

Exactly. Its the same reason Pediophiles try to get jobs at Disney World.

The truly scary part is that they could have simply gone to the Bay County Clerk of Courts website and run his name. That doesn't cost anything. I feel sorry for this girl and her family. Nothing worse than that late night/long distance call saying there has been a horrible incident.

That "resort" and I use the term incredibly loosely is probably the nastiest thing I've ever seen. This also isn't the first major incident on property. Several months ago they had a murder in the restaurant.

If the resort had ran a criminal history report, as they should do for any employee, they would have known not to place a convicted thief in a job of security. That would have most likely meant that he wouldn't have been on the property, and the girl wouldn't have been raped and fallen off of the fifth floor balcony as she reportedly struggled with the guy, landing on concrete three floors below. Basic rules of business.
