While I was in the Bank today (one of the largest ones and not one I am terribly worried about) there were probably about 10 or more people, mainly elderly, that came in asking about the health of the Bank. The managers didn't explain about FDIC insurance or didn't look at account balances (maybe they had an idea already). Nonetheless, people were scared.

Makes ya wonder if there will be fewer snowbirds heading south this winter...or will they be staying home to keep their eye on the bankers.

Like my 101 yr. old Grandfather says, in his best James Cagney voice, who has lived through the Great Depression---
"I've got a cane and I know how to use it!!" :D

snowbirds will be scared at first, then when they get that first winter heating bill....ding ding ding ding ding...you know it may be cheaper to close up the old homestead and head to that condo on the beach.

Another vote for local credit unions. We've been with Eglin since about 2000, and have nothing but good things to say about it- great service, no fees, lots of amenities. Last time I was in there, they've got some sort of new nationwide agreement with other CUs that will let me walk into 3,000 other credit unions in the country and use them for basic banking services just like I would for the branch across 20 from me.

Right here!
Make that Wells Fargo - Cit must be fuming! At least the feds don't have to write a check! good news.

In an abrupt change of course, Wachovia Corp. said Friday it will be acquired by Wells Fargo & Co. in a $15.1 billion all-stock deal, wiping out Wachovia’s previous plan to sell its banking operations to rival suitor Citigroup Inc.

A key difference is that the Wachovia deal will be done without government assistance, while the Citigroup deal would have been done with the help of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

I agree about credit unions...I have used mine for years ( since the savings and loan bailout) and it is where I plan to stay. My darling nephew lives in Charlotte and has worked for Wachovia for years. He and his family are waiting to hear what the futhure holds for them and their four kids....

All the banks are jacking up fees. BofA charged me 25% on a $20.00 withdrawl from a non BofA ATM last week. Be careful what services you're using, they're likely loaded down with lots of hidden fees right now.

Actually, not all banks are increasing their fees. Whitney has had the same fee structure before all this mess, and it should have it afterwards. They did not get involved in sub-prime lending and are in great shape because of it. They are also lending money still, unlike the majority of the competition.
