Since Jan. 1, 2005, Walton has had the lowest unemployment rate in five quarters ? the second and third quarters in 2005 and the first, second and third quarters in 2006. Looking at the monthly data, Walton County had the lowest unemployment in April - August 2005 and March - October 2006.
Most recently, Walton County has the lowest unemployment rate in October at 2 percent. Madison County has the highest at 7.4 percent
Statewide for that same period, Florida?s unemployment was 3.1 percent, down slightly from the previous month and down 0.4 percentage points from 3.5 percent a year ago.
Job growth in October continued to be strong, as the state added 219,300 jobs over the year, growing at 2.8 percent, nearly twice the national rate. The national rate of growth was 1.5 percent for the same period.
Florida?s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for October 2006 of 3.1 percent was 1.3 percentage points lower than the national rate of 4.4 percent.
Job growth by sector was led by Professional and Business Services (+64,200 jobs), Education and Health Services (+32,000 jobs), and Leisure and Hospitality (+29,200 jobs).
The Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Miami Beach MSA led the state in employment growth (+47,200 jobs, +2.0 percent), followed by the Orlando-Kissimmee and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSAs with over-the-year job growth in October 2006 of +37,200 jobs and +27,200 jobs, respectively.
