The Walton County Small Business Association (WCSBA) today announced the organization’s 2015-2016 advocacy platform.

Overwhelmingly adopted by the organization’s membership – which includes more than 150 small businesses that employ over 1,500 people – the platform will guide the WCSBA’s work over the next two years.

The platform calls for county government to: streamline codes and ordinances, eliminate unnecessary regulation, improve communication between government and businesses, invest in innovative job creation projects, require greater transparency for newly-introduced ordinances, and maintain existing property and sales tax rates.

The platform also affirms that WCSBA members oppose proposals by county government to create a new business licensing regime, oppose the creation of new ordinances that are detrimental to the county’s business climate, and oppose the incorporation of South Walton as its own city.

“Our members not only want Walton County to remain ‘open for business,’ they want county government to foster a positive environment for economic growth and sustainability – one that takes into consideration the needs of residents, small business owners, and the hardworking employees of our county’s small and family-owned businesses,” said Larry Anchors, the president of the WCSBA.

“This platform reflects these important priorities and provides county leaders with a roadmap for smart growth,” Anchors said.

WCSBA Advocacy Platform

· SUPPORT the streamlining of Walton County’s existing codes and ordinances, so that business owners can understand county rules and comply with them.

· SUPPORT improved communication between Walton County’s government and small businesses, especially on issues related to roads, bridges, and infrastructure.

· SUPPORT the use of RESTORE Act dollars to support economic growth and job creation throughout Walton County, as opposed to using these dollars to fund the regular operations of government.

· SUPPORT the creation of a new county policy requiring all new, proposed ordinances to include a Need, Impact, Cost and Enforcement (NICE) Statement.

· SUPPORT maintaining, but not increasing, Walton County’s existing millage tax and sales tax rates.

· OPPOSE any and all efforts to create a business licensing regime in Walton County, which will threaten existing businesses while stifling the creativity and innovation of entrepreneurs.

· OPPOSE punitive parking, signage, and beach access ordinances designed to limit the rights of small businesses.

· OPPOSE efforts to incorporate South Walton as its own city or as several cities.

IIRC this organization formed to oppose a $50 business license fee. That was 2 years ago and 2 rounds of $100 annual dues. So far people have spent $150 to prevent paying $50. Guess this is why I don't work for myself.
