DEFUNIAKSPRINGS —A Walton County salvage company owner was arrested Thursday after he failed to file appropriate records for more than 100 vehicles he purchased to destroy.
Mark Runge, 49, owner of AA Auto Salvage and Recycling at 442 County Road 1087 in Mossy Head, was arrested following a lengthy investigation on his secondary metal recycling company, according to a news release from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
A tip was passed on to investigators in July regarding stolen vehicles being sold to Runge’s business that were not being reported to the proper law enforcement as required by law. Investigators already had delivered a letter in April to tell Runge to gain compliance, and gave him a two-week grace period to do so.
Investigators said they observed vehicles come and go from the business. They discovered Runge had filed numerous certificates of destruction through the tax collector’s office, and tickets remaining after the letter of compliance were never reported to reporting agency LEADS online, which is required by law, according to the news release.
During the two-week grace period, Runge purchased and crushed 134 vehicles without reporting the transactions. Runge was arrested and charged with failure to report records.
He was released from the Walton County Jail on Friday morning on $1,000 bond, the release said.
