Thanks Guys ! I am now in search of an old fashioned bike (until I get used to riding one againlol). It would be a shame to live or stay here and not have one. I have an 18 speed with hand brakes but I am not comfortable with riding it. I was an avid bike rider in my much younger years so I think starting out with a bike with not so many bells and whistles would work better for me.

I ride a _lot_ on a fancy 18 speed myself, but it's really too fast for the bike path. I ride on the path whenever possible but there are a few places where it's actually safer to just be in traffic. Gulf Place is one, Seaside is another, and some of Rosemary Beach. I was on the bike path just east of Seaside, last week, and was clipped by a car coming out of it's driveway, across the path, to enter the road. Other than those 3 places, you can pretty much ride the path from one end to the other. And it is incredible.
I think I may get one of these: Amazon.com: Street Bike Footbike - Pearl Blue: Sports & Outdoors

Michigan but someday in SoWal as well
Congratulations! Enjoy making wonderful memories.

As for bikes, I bought two used bikes from one of the bike rental companies here and they've been fine. They were selling the used bikes in the fall after the peak season. Not fancy at all (a nice sunny yellow color), and someday we'll paint them up again and put SoWal stickers on them. I figured the used bike places have the kinds of bikes that can sit outside and withstand the weather (though it's better to cover them).
