Hello Yall!! I feel like I already know most of you. I get on here all the time, but have never--I mean EVER posted anything anywhere in my life!! BE gentle with me....
My family and I have been coming to SoWal now for what will be our 5th year. We always come in late May, but chose to make the pilgramage to Disney this year instead. Great trip--but NO VACATION!! Now we are taking the kid's fall break and going back to Seagrove that we loved and missed SO much (my husband said on the trip home frome Orlando, he could hardly stop the car from turing onto I-10 West-ha ha). Anyway--What do we pack? I know its warm during the day, but is it cool enough for hoodies at night? Just trying to figure it out.
Oh yeah, we are from extreme Western Ky. Mayfield exactly-about 20 miles south of the confluences of the TN and Cumberland Rivers into the Ohio and 20 miles east of the confluence of the Ohio into the Mississippi. Just in case you wanted to know. Yes, I'm wordy...all this information for a weather report!:dunno:

Early October has daytime highs in the low 80s, overnight lows in the mid-low 60s, and water temperatures around 80. We don't like to admit it to non-locals (we want to keep the beach to ourselves then) but a lot of locals consider it to be the best weather of the year.

Wow. Mayfield. Small world. My BIL used to live there when he taught at Murray State, and we spent a couple years in Martin when perfesser mouse taught at UTM. (Ended up here because UTM just really wasn't the right place for us to be) I've got some good memories of driving up to see BIL on Saturdays, hanging out at his house, and then hitting a place called Chu Fai for tasty strip mall Chinese food for takeout. Don't suppose it's still there? It seemed to be a big cut above the other strip mall Chinese restuarants in the area.

Thanks for the info!!!
Sure "the Fly" is still the place for Chinese here. They have actually expanded into another store front in that shopping center, added a hibachi and sushi bar too. Always packed on the weekends--especially after church on Sundays. Still very very good
I promise not to tell anyone how good the weather should be. To tell you the truth, I'm trying to get AWAY from here, not take it with me!!!

IMO, Sept., Oct., Nov. and even the first part of Dec. are the best months of the year here. (Please don't tell anyone). Just kidding. Autumn Tides is cool!

Okay, well speaking of local businesses, is the Seagrove Mrkt still at the corner? We heard it may be moving. I just love sitting on the porch eat'n a gouper sandwich, my mouth is watering now. My Dad loves that place. He tells everyone its his favorite restaurant. He about flipped when we went to Disney in May instead of SoWal. He now sees the light at the end of the tunnel. He may forgive me yet.......

The Seagrove Mkt is still in the same location. Also try Georges in Alys Beach. Same owners, a little more upscale. Some of the same sandwiches and some expanded choices.

We are from Ohio and usually go to SOWAL in early June. Last year, a trip down south took us to SOWAL that exact same week in October, and we were wondering much of the same things that you are wondering about. We found the gulf water to be plenty warm to get into and hang out in. There were more jellyfish at this time of year. I usually never see them in early June, but got stung 3x in one afternoon in October - even while trying to be careful and look out for them. But, I guess depending on what kind of jellyfish they were - I didn't find it to be more than an "irritation" that went completely away in about 30 minutes (make sure you scrub the stinging cells off with handfuls of sand while you are still in the water!).

We also found the pool water to be good enough to get into at the condo. The pool was not heated, and it was not bath water warm like it is in June - but we were definitely not afraid to get in.

Daytime air temps were 85-90 degrees. Nighttime temps were in the 60's.

The cool thing is that the sun sets over the water - instead of over the land, so be sure to be out at the beach at sunset with camera in hand.

Also, during this week was the migration of the monarch butterflies - and they were everywhere! Beautiful!

We just brought shorts and t-shirts. No long pants were needed. I think I brought a light jacket, but never put it on.

The only negative thing we experienced that week was red tide. Some days it was pretty bad and irritated your throat while out on the beach, but I think there was only one day that it was bad enough not to be able to get into the water. Oh yeah, and the bugs are a little bigger - we saw a BIG spider (the size of the palm of your hand) and some palmetto bugs here and there.

Sewing B, I'm about thirty minutes from Mayfield in Carlisle Co.,but, if you are going to Seagrove fall break, I'll be about ten minutes from you because I'll be in Grayton. Can't wait.

What a small world. Grayton is so beautiful. We do pictures there.
I'm glad I picked today to post! I work with some from Carlisle. My husband and I both work at the hospital here.

Anyway thanks for everybody's information. I'm not afraid of jellyfish--I don't think?? Well not in the scale of things. I don't like the aspect of palm size spiders though. Little ones give me the willies.
