This is probably the wrong thread to put this in, but my general attitude toward you and my appreciation of your feelings (even though they can be very verboseI grew up on a farm in rural North Central Florida. My family was very conservative and I of course went to church and sunday school and listened and participated in singing many baptist hymns. I think I was 5 or 6 when I heard my first beatle song on the radio while traveling with the family on vacation. My mother quickly turned the channel to either country music or gospel but I could not get that song out of my head. I wish I could remember the song but even though my mother told me that was the devils music it seemed to hit a nerve that made me feel happy. I never really felt happy with gospel music and so this was very exiting. I actually worked on tobacco farms as early as I can remember which was probably around that same time and the other workers who were teenagers and they were all listening to rock and roll music. Now when you grow up on a farm you start working really early in life and I used my $1.00 per day wages to buy me a transistor radio before I was in the first grade. Since I was forbidden to listen to the devils music I had to find a safe place away from my parents. I got a small tent and set it up in our small pecan orchard out back. I can vividly remember John Lennon's vocals and became a big fan of all rock and roll music including the beatles. By the time I was a teenager I felt like our church had missed on spiritual truth but I appreciated and respected the effort that members of the church including my family spent on community events and purpose of life. By the time John Lennon wrote and sang Imagine I was certain that religion was falling short on spiritual truth. I could go on about music forever because I like to write but I will surmise to say that I like most all music but those classic rock and roll songs still hit that happy nerve and I believe John Lennon was on to something bigger than what my small little rural church could "imagine". I would say that 60's and 70's music was so important in my life for so many reasons that I will always have a happy place to go to when life gets rough. I am very lucky that way![]()
I worked for a music and record distributing company after release from the service. During my time with them I acquired a very large collection of LP’s containing many genres of music and groups, some were limited and semi rare editions. Unfortunately the apartment was burglarized in the 70’s and it all belongs to someone else now.Agreed. Yes I try to connect to people and music connects a lot of people. "A Hard Day's Night" was probably my theme song as life was so hard back then. My first VHS tape that I bought was Three Dog Night and I bought it at TG&Y when I bought my first portable VHS player. Hundreds of VHS tapes followed as we kids traded them back and forth. I wish I had kept my Beatles albums but I could get about 4 or 5 other albums in a trade. Probably because of my transistor radio and listening to Wolfman Jack on WAPE I still like to listen to the radio even with all the commercials. Anyway yes we have much in common which is my hope in humanity. I have told my family that I do not want a funeral when I die but I want a celebration of life with 60's and 70's music![]()
That’s a sad story. I’ve had two boxes of cassettes stolen out of my truck through the years. But not the same as rare records. My first LP was “Meet the Beatles”. I played my LPs mostly on a portable suitcase kind of turntable. When I went to college, they were so abused, I sold most of them for 50 cents.I worked for a music and record distributing company after release from the service.
