govt rewarding bad behavior, and not rewarding good behavior -- eg- giving huge tax breaks on heavy, fuel-guzzling vehicles and almost no tax credits for energy efficient vehicles.

Great thread (and Beachquartz, I also wish we could legislate the NCAA.)

My pragmatic top priority: the economy, silly

My idealistic top priority: alternative energy would get its own Manhattan Project -- shoot for the moon, as they say.

The two are inexorably tied together anyway. We have to clean up our own house, big time, and put a larger emphasis on American ingenuity, a smaller emphasis on false economic prop-ups like shopping.

Right here!
1. What is the number 1 issue facing this country?

2. What is the most important issue in this election to you?

1. Energy independence from foreign oil, especially Iran and Venezuela (but not Mexico or Canada) and limiting our dependence on oil in general.

2. See #1 above

Can I ask a side question of some of the posters - why the economy? Going through a recession is just part of an economic cycle, I'm not sure what everyone is expecting Washington to do about it?

Not so much concerned about the ebb and flow of the economy, more the consistent dumbarse shortsided economic policies and their outfalls.

The economic meltdown--the financial system of the USA is seriously, seriously shattered.

I don't expect Washington to "fix" the economy (this is going to be a long short-term cycle imo -- though I bow to SHELLY's expertise on this one). But I do believe it should do what it can to ensure its long-term health.

Finding ways to tinker with Social Security and Medicare so they don't drag us down as much as the projections indicate is one factor. Encouraging alternative energy innovations is another one -- Thomas Friedman says this may make or break the future of our country as a world leader, and that makes sense to me. Americans are showing signs of lagging behind in the innovations department, but we sure are great shoppers.

It is important that the government provide health care to everyone, or do you just want them to make reforms so health care is affordable for everyone?

Health care is creeping up my list too, as it is freaking ridonkulous what they charge for premiums and services.
