If they are still readable, they can be donated to jails, hospitals or nursing homes. Or places with waiting areas like laundromats or oil change/automotive stores. Or possibly even to troops serving overseas, or to local bases...
For crafts, perhaps churches with active youth groups, schools and pre-schools.
Making magazine beads is the coolest way to reuse old magazines, IMO. There's an organization called Bead for Life (Handmade bead jewelry, beaded jewelry, handcrafted beads, paper beads) that helps Ugandan women become income earners and business owners by providing them with the materials to make paper beads, as well as financing and education for their businesses. I know there are other organizations like this as well, and the beads are a big hit all over the world. I'm not sure if you can donate to them or not, but it's worth a little research.
Check out this video of how the bead is made, too cool!

wow that is so cool, great video!
I am a hoarder, and I have virtually every issue of Southern Accents magazine that has ever been published (first issues are from the late 70's). I wonder if I could put that on eBay.![]()

Does anyone have any suggestions for old magazines?? I know I can probably recycle them BUT was looking for alternative solutions. I know back when I was in school we used to bring in magazines for cut n paste projects. Do schools still do that?
I need to make them disappear from my living room![]()
