The original Psycho was very scary even though the special effects were crude for today's standards. Silence of the Lambs was way scary too.

Okay I'll bite.

Some will laugh but I watched the Blair Witch Project one night and the very next night, I was sitting in the woods with a couple of my buddies camping. My dang neck hurt the next day from looking over my shoulder all night. :funn:

Slight tangent:

We told my mother in law about the Blair Witch Project, and sometime later she was browsing through the channels and saw it on the listing. She started to watch it but couldn't make it through the movie.

She called us at the house the next day and said, "That Blair Witch Project movie is vulgar. All it was was naked people running around in the woods."

My wife said, "Mom, I don't know what you watched but there weren't any naked people in that movie."

Turns out she saw the title but failed to really read it. She had been watching a spoof on Cinemax called "Bare Wench Project". :rotfl:

Did you know that The Changeling was based on a true story that happened in Denver? It actually happened just a few blocks from our old house, at Cheesman Park, which used to be a cemetery and still has corpses underneath the grass, though that has nothing to do with the movie.
A musician moved into the Changeling house and found the diary of a little boy, an invalid, who had been "replaced" by a healthier son.
That movie was indeed scary, is one of my favorites, though it gets a little hokey at the end.

When our boys were younger, every Halloween, we always used to rent Lady in White. It is frightening and has great suspense and atmosphere, but no blood.

That sounds like something my Mom would do. My sister to her to Europe, and when they came back, Mom said, "We had a great time in Italy." I said, "I didn't know you went to Italy. I thought you went to England and Ireland." She said, "Italy, Ireland - I get them mixed up." Now *that's* scary.

You're kidding! That is my favorite all-time spooky movie. It is not one of the most well known (from 1980) and last year I finally found the DVD of it online. I had no idea that it was based on a true story! I think one of the reasons it is so good is the quality of the actors--George C. Scott, Melvyn Douglas (right before he died) and Trish Van Devere (George's wife.)

The scenes with the ball bouncing down the stairs and the tape recording of the ghost child still give me chills. I recommend it to anyone wanting a really well written and acted scary movie. And yes, the ending was a little overdone.
