I will be needing a 6 month rental starting May 1, 2007. A fully furnished, newer 2 br 2 ba. pet friendly (2 very well behaved cats and a mother in law) unit would fill the bill. Ideally the rental will be south of 98 and east of Blue Mtn Beach. Rent should be no more than $1200 per month.
When is a good time to formally seek the rental ? Should I pursue VRBO, or the newspaper, or r/e agent ? I may be jumping the gun by posting this so early but I just wanted to know the protocol. Thank You.

I don't think you are posting this too early. We already are booked for a May rental. Lots of people think ahead! I don't think you'd have so much luck on VRBO because that's mainly geared for vacationers (the only exception being snowbird winter rentals). I'd try a realtor since no one knows the beach better.

Goofer,

The earlier you jump on this, the better. The combination of your location, timing, price-range, length of lease, and pets might present a bit of a sticky whicket.

There's lots of people who truly believe  that the RE market is going to come roaring back in the Spring and may not want to commit to a long lease when they'll be putting their unit on the market.

On the other hand, folks who rent out for the summertime will be wanting top dollar for their summer rentals. As you well know the price you state for a monthly rental is closer to a weekly rental cost (if that).

I wish you luck in your quest...but you may want to consider working on a "Plan B" too.

(P.S. I would offer you a place to crash, but then I'd have to wear one of these for 6 months.)

I too think you might have a hard time finding something this cheap during the high season.

Since you are starting in May, you are almost certainly going to have to look at property that has no chance for weekly vacation rentals.

There are almost no advertisers on vrbo that look for monthly rentals, except during off seasons.
