There were flags long before there were lifeguards to "explain" them.

Not to mention that there is a sign in 2 LANGUAGES AND WITH PICTURES at every flag location (and MANY other locations).

I am not disagreeing with you but it in the press release the SWFD makes it clear that is the reason the flags are not being flown.

And I am calling BS on that reason! :D God knows press releases are always the 100% truth.

Good for you, I just want to make sure that everyone knows that it wasn't a decision by the TDC to cut costs.

It was not a cost issue but they were following the rules of the USLA of which ALL of the life gaurds are certified to their standards. I belive that Gary takes the job to heart and only does things that will protect him and the fire district in case of a law suit.

Language from release:

"Without lifeguards on duty to educate the public regarding the flag system and make beach flag change determinations due to quickly deteriorating weather and surf conditions, it has been decided not to fly beach safety flags during the above mentioned months. After careful consideration regarding this decision, it is anticipated that when a greater emphasis is placed on the relationship between beach flags and lifeguards, there will be greater adherence to the beach warning flags when they are flown during the lifeguard season."

Translation: "The flag system is too bloody complicated for beach visitors to understand without an expert around to help them, but we'd rather take a chance on people drowning than change it."

Actually it's the most widely used system. PCB just recently upgraded to use it too.

How many times did you go to the beach with the intent of swimming this winter?

FWIW - PCB was flying single red yesterday afternnoon.

And I saw a big billboard in PCB saying "stay out of the water on double red".

None. But you don't even have to be swimming to get yourself killed. A few years ago, a winter visitor -- an older man who I believe was from Scotland -- was just wading in the surf and got knocked down by a big wave and swept out to sea. And, there are dedicated body and board surfers who will go out in almost anything.

I told Mama Scooterbug they stopped flying the beach safety flags when there weren't lifeguards there to explain them to people - her response "Did they take down all the signs?"

Her next question -"But aren't there only lifeguards in 8 places on the whole beach?" :dunno:
