I want to redecorate my bedroom and I don't have a clue what I want to do. I know what I don't like when I see it but I need some inspiration. From what sites, publications or tv shows do you get your best decorating ideas?

I know just what you mean dbuck. I have got to make some changes in my house but I am so content with leaving things the way they are that I don't ever do anything. I need some ideas and direction. I am going to ask one of my good friends to come over and give me her "honest" advice. I know have too much junk (special things) sitting around. Pictures everywhere! Keepsakes! So that is my plan. Get honest advice and try to implement a few changes. Oh yea it all has to be cheap! There's the rub!

great subject dbuck.

I have never ever decorated my bedroom. it's hidden upstairs and it has a comfy bed in it which is all I really care about. it needs some decor for sure. how to get motivated? and how to get ideas?

some people are naturally gifted in design & decor. not me!!! I know I want it to be very comfy, practical, simple, cozy. Not over-designed, stuffy or cluttered with "stuff". but I would love all new BR furniture, art, etc. the closet definitely needs to be re-designed as far as storage, etc.

We should all pick a room in our house that we want to redo and post progress! I want to do my back office/spare bedroom/catch all. Where I am sitting right now.

I get decorating ideas from all my shelter magazines. When I see something I like, I rip the page out and put it in my file. Then it gets organized by color, so I have pages of nothing but--we'll say--rooms that are predominantly green. I figure if I can sort through pages and pages of something that's the same color, and not be nauseated after, then I must like the color. And that's good to know.

I watch HGTV all the time but I have to say it's more for entertainment than anything else.

The library is a great place to pick up decorating books. I'm lucky as ours always keep current. I just checked out Candice Olson's new book.

I have to say that our bedroom is decorated around the fabric I used for window treatments. I took the fabric as a cue on what wall color to choose and what bedding. Alternately, you could start with the bedding. When you figure in the cost of a good comforter and matching pillows, it's an investment, so that might be a good place to start.

Dbuck and everyone else, just remember to put your bed in the best feng shui position. ;-)

Please tell me you are kidding! Other than Sowal, my other addicton is HGTV! Home and Garden Television. Its the only channel one needs. Occasionally Discovery and Travel Channel have shows about luxury homes and what not that are quite inspirational.

However, per my own website, with my own artwork, I say "I partake of the spirits, and the spirits move me!" :funn:

I love Candice Olson's decorating. You notice they tell how much her rooms cost. Her lighting alone would break my budget.

How do you know the best best feng shui position for your bed? And what are shelter magazines? :dunno:

if you would like to decorate it to look just like mine, here is how to do it :

get boxes and boxes of clothes and throw them all over like a closet exploded.

then gets bags and bags of dust and dust bunnies and coat everything with them

voila - you have my bedroom, living room, etc.

OMG! We have the same decorator!

Just kidding.

I've never heard of shelter magazines. I don't think I would want my home to look like a shelter.

I like "Decorating on a Dime" and other similar shows. Its "budget" AND "beautiful", which sounds like a good name for another show!

As for feng shui, Karen Kingston has some great books out about furniture placement and clutter clearing as well! VERY INSPIRATIONAL.:D

I get an image of how I want a room to look like, formulate a plan, spend a day, and whip it into shape. All those years at Collaborations really helped. Of course, my house looks just like Collaborations, only smaller. And not yet bulldozed!:D

Love HGTV too. When the kids go to bed and I'm done with the news, that's the channel I have on for the most part. And I can watch and Sowal at the same time!

I love her too, and wish I could afford to hire a decorator - but ALAS, I cannot.

I also have the same decorator! And I like the budget shows too. "Decorating Cents" is another of my favorites. Used to love "Room by Room" too, but it seems like it's only on during the day now - and in reruns.

Back to the initial post, I am in the midst of redoing my master bedroom. I am going with a tropical theme and my inspiration was the valances I found. They are a heavily textured tan colored weave with palm trees and beading. Then I found a wicker bed at Ikea, and decided to buy the rest of my furniture there as well. And yesterday, I finally broke down and committed to having hardwood floors installed upstairs in all the bedrooms. I'm very excited - after seeing AbacoMah's pictures of her new floors I was hell-bent on getting mine done.
