I 'm just curious, do you know anyone who had their insurance cancelled who wasn't on a really crappy policy? In other words, they had decent private coverage and it wasn't junk insurance. I think Obama should have emphasized that a lot of people's "sub-standard" insurance was going to be cancelled by the company as soon as ACA kicked in. Still I find it difficult to believe that people with these policies weren't aware of the possibility. This is an article that is clearly from a left-wing slant, but it does mention a few key points that offer a rebuttal to some of the most scathing criticism. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but it's worth a read. Here's one quote:

No, but here's my problem with the premise. Self employed folks with assets but weak cash flow are numerous especially in a weak economy. Catastrophic coverage is better for these folks than paying a penalty and subsidizing everyone else. To ask young people to pay clearly inafforable rates and then justify it by telling them they'll get a nice refund is pure fantasy for those struggling in the mid/lower tiers of society. On the face of it, this is a dead giveaway to for-profit insurers first, folks with preexisting conditions, and the indigent through Medicaid. It crushes people who are not asking for help. This is the same problem I have with the administration approach to immigration. They aren't addressing the underlying problem of the bum rush at our borders. ACA does not address the underlying problem with healthcare. It's a well intentioned half assed give away to corporations, but does not reign in healthcare costs. That's my whole disappointment with Obama as president. He does not fight for his core beliefs, is weak in leadership, and he takes the path of least resistance on these huge issues.

I want the President to succeed, but this is a huge issue that must be addressed in a better way.

I find that unusual. When I was really young, the last thing I would have considered is a catastrophic insurance policy. There is no way I could have come up with even $2k-$3k all at once for out-of-pocket expenses. It sounds like catastrophic coverage would be great for young affluent people with a high net worth.

The catastrophic coverage is for older Americans with limited cash flow but assets. Young people do not, for the most part, need health care but sporadically. When I was young I paid for services as I needed them. The whole system now is so completely out of control, with cost shifting, that is not possible for most people. Look at the folks who have to pay for others, and you see a picture of great inequality. The young are already hosed on Medicare and Social security. Now in the midst of a mild depression we are going to ask them to pay the tab for the older generation and the needy. That's quite the leap. The mechanics of how you pay is not making sense. The elimination of coverage for millions runs counter to the Presidents assertions.. Something is not adding up.

I certainly had a different attitude when I was younger. It would have been unthinkable for me not to have insurance. Everyone needs insurance no matter what age. All it takes is one injury, accident, surgery and that's it. I don't know how much ACA is, but a couple hundred dollars a month would be a small price to pay. I don't think it's too much to ask a person to sock away that much for medical expenses. Some people are spending that much money on cigarettes.
