Thanks to Lori Ceier at Walton Outdoors, here is a SoWal link to THE best remedy for yellow fly bites. We keep some in the refrigerator ALWAYS and apply it immediately when bitten. It works for wasp and bee stings and just about any insect bite that you may have an allergic reaction to: http://www.sowal.com/bb/nature-environment/35475-yellow-flies-back.html

I would recommend stirring the initial mixture or letting the mixture settle for a few minutes before opening a sealed container as slight pressure may build up when shaken.

Thank you so much for this link. It's the only mixture I have not tried yet. I'm having a terrible time trying to keep the swelling and itching under control. One bit me on the ankle again yesterday and today my entire foot is swollen like a balloon, and the old bites from two weeks ago just start randomly itching and swelling. No idea why I'm suddenly so sensitive to their bites this year. Lucky?...

Thankfully there aren't as many out here as there had been in the last two weeks!

yellow flies

Bren, they are really fast too and when they get on you, you won't feel them.

If you let them land on you though, you've got a really good chance of slapping the sheet out of 'em while they're trying to get a bite. I hunt them down at my house!
They are attracted to dark moving victims, so Mosquito control will bring you a beach ball that's been painted black. They then put glue all over it and hang it in the shade as a trap. It somewhat works. Not all areas are affected by yellow flies. In Desttin, they don't even know what one is.

Thanks for all of the info. I had no idea what they were. I may look up the info. to get that black ball from. I like to sit outside (when not so hot)) on my back patio sometimes. I had to get a citonella candell for the mosquitoes that are eating me uip. Dark moving victims huh? I will try to remember that when I am out back. Don't wear black or move much! LOL Anyway, thanks everyone. Oh, do they like to bite little dogs? I have a chihuaha and I was just wondering if they like animals. :yikes: Thanks everyone.

They are awful. Not huge, but painful!

Their mandible operates like a scissor and actually cuts you! Horrible little vermin!

Are they still bad, Y'all?

Thanks for the info. on the bite remedy. I keep saying the mosquitos around here are viscious. Perhaps I have had a yellow fly bite and not realized it. I've been bitten sometimes and it really hurts and itches bad, but just thought it was a killer mosquito.

I think in New Orleans (which is where I am from) we called them sand flies. That larger picture looks just like them. They also bite and hurt much more than a mosquito. They would probably love my patio area as it is pretty well shaded and has plants on it.

By the way, I saw a very large bumble bee looking thing. It went into the wood on the patio where I realized it dug a hole and just went right in there. It was the oddest thing. There is a hole just bit enough for it to go into and it must have made the hole because I don't see anymore holes on that piece of wood. I am worried I have some kind of nesting going on in there. Does anyone know anything about this. It is not a yellow flie. It is fat and yellow with black lines on it's torsoe. I would not want that thing to bite me. It is very large and my dog goes out there to. Anyone have any info. on this creature? Boy, the things we have to worry about in summer!!! :bang:Thanks again.

Those are carpenter bees. Google it or go to Wikipedia, lots of info on the internet.

Ended up in Sacred Heart ER AGAIN last night from a Yellow Fly bite. These Flies have become my Kryptonite. Despite taking prescription preventative daily, still went into severe reaction. I didn't even know I had been bitten until the anaphalaxis symptoms kicked in! Yes, I had my Epi Pen by my side, as always and we used it.

I guess this is basicallly just bumping my previous post.. if anyone knows an allergist that is familiar with this Yellow Fly i.e. has serum for de-sensitation shots PLEASE let me know!!!I'm having trouble.... THANKS! and Take Care! Wooft! Kendall Horne 850-585-9078

 Oh. I thought you were saying my advice fell in that category. My bad!

I still don't get those big black balls that hang from trees down there. (And suddenly the door was open for this serious thread to become yet another reference to OMBs.)

Those big black balls are beach balls painted black with an adhesive coating sprayed on. They attract no-see-ums. And they do work.
