Cases of the deadliest form of skin cancer are on the rise among young women, but not young men, according to a study published Thursday in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Analyzing government data on Caucasian men and women ages 15 to 39, Mark Purdue and his colleagues at the National Cancer Institute found that, between 1980 and 2004, annual cases of melanoma among young women increased by 50 percent from 9.4 cases per 100,000 women to 13.9 cases per 100,000 women.
Researchers also found a greater increase in young women having thicker and metastatic melanomas in which the cancer spreads to other areas of the body during that time period.
The incidence of melanoma among young men did not change over this time period, the authors noted in a press release.

Can you all think of one reason melanoma is more common in young women and not young men??? Just walk into a tanning salon and see you patronizes them. A Scandinavian study recently showed than use of indoor tanning beds was highly linked to melanoma in women under the age of 40.

I am spear-heading a movement for class action lawsuits against tanning salons, tanning bed manufacturers, and the indoor tanning association. PM me if you or a loved-one had melanoma and used indoor tanning beds at home or in a salon.

Thank you.

I am a 38 year old female, who lost her husband to malignant melanoma 9/22/04. He suffered a miserable death from this disease. He laid in tanning beds many years of his life. Ironically, I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma 1/22/08, I also laid in tanning beds from my teenage years through my mid-thirties. I know as well as my dermatologist and oncologist it was caused from both tanning beds and tanning accelerators/creams. Someone needs to do what you are doing to spare today's teens from this deadly disease. After having a mole removed twice from my lower right leg, my surgeon cut off about 1/4 of my calf. Needless to say, I have a horrible scar which I was embarrassed about at first and kept it covered with long pants. Now, I am not ashamed, I wear shorts and skirts so everyone can see and when they ask, I tell them to stay out of the tanning bed, it will kill you.

Thank you for sharing. After reading this I will never tan in a tanning bed ever again. I tanned seasonally in my late teens and twenties a little in my thirties. Just enough to start out the summer or before going to Florida. I haven't been in a tanning bed in over a year. I prefer to use self-tanners now. I always understood the risks but used them anyway. Being from a not so sunny and warm state it always made me look and feel better.(at the time)

I'm so sorry for the loss of your husband. What is your prognosis?

The same thing can be said about sunblock. The only thing that stops harmful rays is thick concrete, lead and being ten feet underground! Take care of your body it's the only one you get! Good thing I have good skin, it makes up for my terrible grammeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

So...what are you saying about the sunblock?
I too have skin cancer...not the malignant melanoma..I have a large ugly scar on my forearm and a not so pretty one on my chest and a small one on the side of my neck which you can't really see.
I was not a tanning bed user...just loved the water...ocean..lake..pool. I don't even like to lay in the sun...and most of my life have used sunscreen. I am blonde, blue eyed and fair with freckles although they have mostly faded.
People rarely listen about the tanning beds..I tell my daughters and their friends they do not listen:lolabove:...even the scars don't scare them or the stories of the 20 something patient who lost her leg then her life to melanoma.
Early detection and prevention is key.

Big difference between using sunblock to help protect your skin and regularly using a tanning bed!

Nothing will make you take sunscreen/protective clothing seriously like watching relatives have nickel sized chunks of skin cut out of them!

Our family is a mix of Irish and Norwegian, which leaves us with extremely easy to burn skin. We don't wear sunscreen daily of course, as covering up and staying inside/under shade is our first line of defense... but if I know we're going out for a while to something like a festival or a waterpark we do use sunscreen. I agree though that sunscreen can be nearly as dangerous. So, I really like the Skin Deep database: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens2008/
It may not be something everyone agrees with, but I know it gives me a base with which to start my research.
