BR - I wasn't trying to change your gender - the "he" I was referring to was Kurt w/ his talk of the chilly empty homes being photographed!

Cloth bags for the grocery would be a great thing to see - especially if they could just get a new holder to make bagging easier. They already have recycling for the plastic bags.

I love how someone starting a thread wanting fun tips on conservation marks all contributors as granola crunchers and non-shavers! Sorry to blow your stereotype 6thGen, but I not only shave, I eat meat, use AC to make myself comfy and drive a car. Making sustainable choices as a consumer isn't limited to those in tie-dye!

When I'm in the checkout line I usually have nothing to do so holding a bag open might be an idea.

A friend of mine likes to call himself a conservative tree hugger. As Maher pointed out the other night, "wouldn't you think conservatives would want to conserve"?

One thing which I rarely see here is in the home construction. So many people have mega-houses which sit empty for months at a time. Seems like a huge waste of materials and energy to me. Also, most homes are not correctly oriented for the best use of natural energy, ie- the Sun's light. I guess you can blame the engineers for the lot layouts on that one.

You don't think oversized homes that sleep 10-15, with a walk-in closet and full bath for every bedroom, and are only used 4 months a year are a good use of resources?

My family had a variety of "environmentally friendly" solutions to fitting extra folks in during vacations - most involved the idea that if you were going to be hanging out inside watching tv or spending your time primping, you could have just stayed at home. Your own room or bathroom was a ridiculous idea.

The "kid's cabin" at my great aunt & uncle's house was a small storage shed next to the house that he'd built kid-sized bunks in. For some reason the child welfare people were never called to save the happy little cousins who had spent the day wearing themselves out playing and now got to hang out & chat together until they fell asleep in their sleeping bags.

amen to that. I will add that, wouldn't you think that liberals want to be free?

Rod Dreher wrote a book and started a blog on Crunchycons. I don't agree with everything but it's an interesting take on stuff. As for "liberals", damn the Progressive Movement for screwing up yet another good thing. I've always considered myself a liberal.

Taking my first blue bag out to the curb in the morning! woohoo!

I also buy a lot of used stuff. It is generally cheaper ($5 DVDs!) and you give something a second life.

I guess my main thing has been conserving (but I'm not a conservative) everything. Not leaving the sink running, not holding the fridge door open... you know the little things that add up in your life.

I also am trying to switch to plant based cleaners. I love the Seventh Generation dish soap.

I donate instead of throwing things away.

And no more water bottles! Those things add up so fast. I got a nifty filtered pitcher around the beginning of the year, and I am amazed at how much money, time, and trash all those bottles caused and/or used.
