May 9, 2013 by SoWal Staff

The Billabong Grom Comp is a local surfing event that offers young surfers a chance to compete competitively. Billabong at Grand Boulevard and Ride On Surf School are teaming up again to host the 4th Annual Billabong Grom Comp on Saturday, May 18 at the Pompano Joe’s Beach Park in Miramar Beach from 9am-till. The Billabong Grom Comp is a surfing competition for young surfers 12 and under and will include five divisions--Tiny Groms 6 and under, Super Groms 7 to 8, Mini Groms 9 to 10, Groms 11 to 12 and Open Groms, a paddle - in division for all ages 12 & under. No surfing experience is required and surfboards will be provided for participants.

We are really excited to continue to offer a surf event like this for local kids in our area,” said Frank Sims, owner of Billabong at Grand Boulevard , Aloha Surf Company and Ride On Surf School. “The Grom Comp is a fun event that is intended to expose young people to surfing in a safe, family-friendly environment. As a lifelong surfer myself, I remember the thrill of my first days on a board and hope to be able to offer the same exciting experience to this younger generation of surfers.”

Inspired by the Occy Grom Comps that are held annually in Southern California, the Billabong Grom Comp is all about children having fun. The entry fee prior to the event is $20 and the day of the event is $25. Each entry receives a signature event tee and goodie bag and entry in a chance to win a free TORQ surfboard along with other prizes (must be present to win). Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the finalists in all five divisions. Parent/guardian participation is also encouraged and push-in assistance is allowed in four of the five divisions. In case of inclement weather, back up date for the event is Sunday, May 19.

“The Billabong Grom Comp is such a cool event ” said Dylan Sims, head instructor at Ride On Surf School. “Austin and I are stoked to see the kids and their parents having such a good time at the beach.”

The 4th Annual Billabong Grom Comp is sponsored by: Billabong Camps, Ride On Surf School, Billabong at Grand Boulevard, Aloha Surf Company, Meyer Board Company, Torq Surfboards, and Dakine.
