That's what the voice at the other end of the phone line said, about a quarter past midnight. It was son Alex telling me the professor for his Monday class declared attendance optional and posted notes for those who would not be there.
I asked Alex if the 3 1/2 hour drive home couldn't wait 'til the morning. Why the rush to get home in the middle of the night? "Because I want to be home." Good enough reason, I guess, and the kid and two other crazy friends piled in the car and headed home to Indianapolis.
It made me think of all the times Merman and I have done long hauls to be with family over Thanksgiving and how well worth it, it was. Until five years ago my parents still lived in the home in New Hampshire that I grew up in, and it exerted a powerful pull, even from Indiana. Usually we saved the 22+ hour trip for the Christmas holidays, but one year that wasn't possible and I was dammed if I was going to miss being "home" for at least Thanksgiving. I needed to be home. We (hahha, Merman) drove 44+ hours roundtrip to be with my family--parents and siblings and their families--for not much more than 72 hours. That was nuts! But it was also wonderful and memorable.
So whose home will you be at for Thanksgiving? Yours? A parent's or sibling's? Is anyone coming home to you (I'm thinking of all of our college babies making their way back
).
Who will be sitting at the table with you for the Thanksgiving feast? (We already know what everyone's eating! ;-) )
