we saw dreamgirls last week and loved loved loved it! the acting was as superb as the singing! all around real entertainment! :clap_1:

Oh good, I'm glad you got to see it! Jaime Fox made some kind of jab like..it's playing all across the country in 800 theaters...you do the math. I don't know why it didn't open everywhere.

It doesn't open Nationally till this weekend. Imagine that it is doing as well as it is, and only in limited release. I never made it to Tallahassee to see it like I planned, and it should finally be in Panama City this weekend. I've been waiting 25 years to see it! Can't wait, have already worn out the soundtrack, just like I did the LP way back when....

When I called the theatre here, they said it wouldn't open till the 19th. I guess they rushed it in, cause I ran to the theater tonight to see it and WOW:clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1:
It was not good, it was GRAYT. I've worn out the album over the last two decades, bought the new CD the day it came out, and already plan on seeing the movie again, and maybe again on the big screen. Its that good.

Just remember, that like a Broadway play, it is very long. However unlike a broadway play, there is no intermission. An emply bladder or depends undergarment is a must.

I'm so happy for Jennifer Hudson that played the lead Effie. Someone needs to serve up a big plate of Crow for Simon the closet case from American Idol. He can actually kiss my ass too. Can't stand him or that show. Jennifer Hudson has a great success story. The Golden Globe. And upcoming Oscar nomination. Which she had better get.:!:

Man, I can't wait to see it again. Will probably go see it Saturday afternoon.

I've just checked our local movie listings and it's here, so Merman and I will be having a Friday night date. I'm crazy about musicals so this will be grayt!

Movie vs Broadway:
The first problem with the movie is that they didn't develop the relationship between Effie and Curtis as they did in the Broadway version. They cut out a lot of that in the movie to make room to highlight Beyonce at the end of the movie. As talented as Hudson is, you don't feel Effie's pain in the movie if you don't have a feeling for her relationship with Curtis when she sings "And I am telling you I'm not going." Not to "dis" the Beyonce extras, but the entire experience doesn't match the Broadway version. Just go to YouTube and compare Jennifer Holliday's "And I am telling you I'm not going" versus Jennifer Hudson's "And I am telling you I'm not going," and you'll get what I'm saying. Still, I agree with the Golden Globe results (in comparison to this year's competition).

I wondered if something DIVA-ish was going on there. They added that song specifically for Beyonce' there at the end, and kinda made it more her story. Which meant that there would be TWO show stopping heart pounding songs, which I quickly noticed, but also didn't care.
Those of us that know the show, know where the focus was with the play. Yes the focus shifted to the beanpole DIVA, but MAN, what a powerful number that is. My heart was racing.
I'm going to compare this movie to Will and Grace and Life in Sowal. Bear with me on this one.
Will and Grace is supposedly about Will and Grace, but anyone who ever watched it did so to see Jack and Karen.
In Dreamgirls, it is billed as starring Jamie Foxx and Beyonce'. Yeah, WHATEVER! The stars are clearly Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy.

Now for the Sowal comparison. I have lived on that beach/area for 23 years. I've seen it go through many changes. I finally left because I was heartbroken to see it become a suburb of Atlanta and Birmingham (I don't mean that in a bad way, but the personality of Seagrove and Grayton are almost gone.) But I don't ***** and moan. What I tell people that whine is this, "Let's all just be thankful that we are fortunate enough to have been part of a great era that once was, to have been a part of the greatest place on earth. Cherish those memories".

Same with Dreamgirls. This is a movie. Based on the play. This is NOT the play. Otherwise, they would have filmed the play on stage. Like they should have done with RENT. (Though I love the movie as well) A lot had to be changed in the Dreamgirls to make it more accessible to a younger audience.

I work with a diverse age group. I'm right smack in the middle (43). I grew up with Diana Ross and the Supremes, and The Jackson Five. But these kids today don't even know who those people are. But they know who Beyonce is. They also don't know how Black Music was stolen and revamped to suit a white audience. They don't know the civil rights movement. I almost wish I myself were 10 or 20 years older. If it weren't for Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, they probably wouldn't even go see it.

Man, I've gone off on another tangent haven't I? Someone please check my medication!:rotfl: Where are my Pirin Tablets?:funn:

Enjoyed your post! I have to agree with you-My daughter didn't even know who Diana Ross was before the movie! But she wanted to see it because of Beyonce and Jennifer. Of course, I took her to see it with me anyway but she really enjoyed it and bought the soundtrack for her ipod.

well, I haven't seen the broadway version, but I can say I think the movie is stands on its own (its own version). If you didn't feel Effie's pain in her "I'm not going" song, you must have been snoozing!:D
