From one of the reviews I read on Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dreamgirls/

Eddie Thunder was a composite of several characters. I think this was the first time I ever saw Eddie Murphy NOT play a variation of himself in a movie. He can really act. He shoudl do it more often. ;-)

I wondered if something DIVA-ish was going on there. They added that song specifically for Beyonce' there at the end, and kinda made it more her story. Which meant that there would be TWO show stopping heart pounding songs, which I quickly noticed, but also didn't care.
Those of us that know the show, know where the focus was with the play. Yes the focus shifted to the beanpole DIVA, but MAN, what a powerful number that is. My heart was racing.
I'm going to compare this movie to Will and Grace and Life in Sowal. Bear with me on this one.
Will and Grace is supposedly about Will and Grace, but anyone who ever watched it did so to see Jack and Karen.
In Dreamgirls, it is billed as starring Jamie Foxx and Beyonce'. Yeah, WHATEVER! The stars are clearly Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy.

Now for the Sowal comparison. I have lived on that beach/area for 23 years. I've seen it go through many changes. I finally left because I was heartbroken to see it become a suburb of Atlanta and Birmingham (I don't mean that in a bad way, but the personality of Seagrove and Grayton are almost gone.) But I don't ***** and moan. What I tell people that whine is this, "Let's all just be thankful that we are fortunate enough to have been part of a great era that once was, to have been a part of the greatest place on earth. Cherish those memories".

Same with Dreamgirls. This is a movie. Based on the play. This is NOT the play. Otherwise, they would have filmed the play on stage. Like they should have done with RENT. (Though I love the movie as well) A lot had to be changed in the Dreamgirls to make it more accessible to a younger audience.

I work with a diverse age group. I'm right smack in the middle (43). I grew up with Diana Ross and the Supremes, and The Jackson Five. But these kids today don't even know who those people are. But they know who Beyonce is. They also don't know how Black Music was stolen and revamped to suit a white audience. They don't know the civil rights movement. I almost wish I myself were 10 or 20 years older. If it weren't for Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, they probably wouldn't even go see it.

Man, I've gone off on another tangent haven't I? Someone please check my medication!:rotfl: Where are my Pirin Tablets?:funn:

dka: I have to agree with you wholeheartedly here...Jennifer and Eddie were clearly the stars, imo. And, I agree that the top billing of Beyonce' and Jamie Foxx probably brought more audiences than the other two would have.
I LOVED this movie though!!
Can't wait to see what Jennifer does next!

This is how big this omission was -- it came in as "Breaking News" via email from CNN (a service I subscribed to for free after 9/11):

"The musical 'Dreamgirls' led today?s Academy Awards contenders with eight nominations, but was shut out in the best picture category for which it had been considered a potential front-runner.

In re to an earlier post:
"DA, your comment about black music being stolen--did you catch the line early in the movie: "Who was the first to sing Hound Dog?" "Elvis Presley." "NO, it was Big Mama Thorton." Sigh. It's been going on a long time. Elvis took Big Mama's blues and made them palatable to the Ed Sullivan audience. The "Dreamettes" and "Eddie Thunder" weren't the first."
That's actually the point I meant to convey. It is brought up in Hairspray as well. It had been going on for quite sometime. Having it happen to the characters in the movie personified the situation and put a face on it.

As for the "Breaking News" on CNN. Obviously we as a movie watching public feel strongly enough about it that "breaking news" was warranted. Think about it. Jennifer Hudson gets the boot from American Idol, but goes on to get the dream role of a lifetime. THEN gets the Golden Globe award. And I could not tell you for the life of me who the other winners of American Idol are/were. Gone, AND forgotten.

Dreamgirls the movie gets a snub in the Best Picture category, but off the top of my head I could not really tell you what else was nominated. "The Queen" I think is one. (wonder why I would remember that?:rotfl: )(Actually, Helen Mirren is one of my all time favorites, that's why). So it may have been snubbed, but this snowball of a movie has really only started to grow. More good things will come from this and people will be talking about this movie for quite some time.:D

Also, Eddie Murphy did an interview on A&E. That character is a combination of many people, including but not limited to James Brown. Remember all of it was loooooosely based on actual events.

My advice to all who haven't seen it and those that are going to go yet again such as myself. JUST SIT BACK AND ENJOY IT!!!!
And make sure you go pee first!!! Its over 2 hours!:funn: :funn: :funn:
