I had a feeling about this one today. I was reading the story this morning in the Courier Journal (Louisville), and it wasn't looking good for him. I started a thread in the lounge, then bagged it because I am somewhat conflicted on Barbaro-

What a courageous horse, and on many levels his owners and docs recognized that he was a horse that could maybe soldier through the extremely difficult healing process that is associated with any equine leg/foot injury. He became a hero for many horse loving children and adults.

On the other hand, it was such a horrific injury, one that no horse has survived (at least that I know about). His "peeps" said all along that if he lost interest in eating and his discomfort could not be managed, then they would euthanize him. I have to believe that Barbaro gave them no reason to make this decision before now, because his owners, trainer, and docs were well respected horsemen.

So he is is now with the great, big hearted racing legends in a pasture in "bluegrass heaven", romping with Secretariat and Ruffian (my 2 horse faves). It is a nice scene to imagine.

Kate cried today when I told her Barbaro died. We have been cheering for Barbaro since his injury. It's strange- I was telling Rapunzel today how all of Kentucky mourned when Secretariat died. I still get sad thnking about that day. A hero is a hero, whether it is human or animal.
