I agree with jdarg about giving yourself a break and using all the best quit smoking tools available to sucessfully become a non-smoker. she's been there!
with zyban, you can and should use nicotine replacement therapy to increase your chance of success.
with chantix, however, since its my current drug of choice, I've had to look into whether I can use nicotine replacement with it. The answer is NO. because the drug blocks nicotine effects, it makes no sense to chew gum or use the patch. apparently, the drug blocks your physical urge to smoke (withdrawals are minimal). the material does state that you should not use nicotine replacement with chantix.
this is just fyi for mangy and anyone else who may choose to use chantix.

Back when I quit, I spent a LOT of time on a stop smoking message board. I do not remember the name, but it really helped to know others were going through the same things I was. I would have physically gone to a support group as jdarg did, but the nearest ones were in Fort Walton and driving was one of my smoking triggers
so that was out of the question. You have your own support group here too, but I'd recommend googling around for more resources too.

Thanks Toots- Chantrix would seem to be the no-brainer choice. Wish it had been around when I tried to quit. I wonder why docs are still prescribing the Wellbutrin? DD- what did your doc say, or did you choose the Wellbutrin?
Here's a little bit of info. Wellbutrin and Zyban are pretty much the same thing. My neighbor is using Wellbutrin to stop smoking.

yes, wellbutrin is the exact same as zyban.
wellbutrin is still a good choice and really reduces physical cravings - your desire to smoke dimishes a great deal. it's an anti-depressant so it helps even out your anxiety from quitting as well.
I don't know which is better. just pointing out the difference between the two as far as the use of nicotine replacement. zyban - you can (but don't have to) use nicotine replacement with this drug - I kind of like this idea better (give me nicotine!). chantix - no nicotine replacement - which means getting those toxins out sooner rather than later (the drug makes nicotine intake not effective anymore, so using it makes no sense, and there could be adverse reaction though this hasn't been studied).
studies show higher quit rates with chantix, but that is based on their own evaluation of the product. I think its a good alternative, but not necessarily best.

I think the best solution is raise to the price of cigs to $20 a pack. That would have motivated the you-know-what out of me!!!
well, if almost certain cancer and death doesn't motivate, what will? :roll: it should be highly motivating - but I for one am still not motivated enough...
