What's wrong w/ a children's fiction book with a hidden world of witches who go to a boarding school where they fly on broomsticks? It's called imagination and creativity. If you're worried about your child joining a coven because they read Harry Potter, you've got bigger issues than a book.

Let's ban all the books w/ potentially subversive ideas!

Ban Shakepeare because he used witches and bad words, dinosaur books because they contradict the bible/creationism, murder mysteries because they put ideas of crime into kid's heads, Little House on the Prairie because they aren't vegetarians, Garfield cartoons because a talking cat is obviously the work of the devil, and Dr. Suess just because he made up words!

I think it glorifies imaginary magical abilities, not witchcraft per se. It glorifies people who use their abilities for good over evil. It glorifies a mother's love. It's lessons are completely compatible with Christian teachings. And it's fiction.

I totally agree. When Sam started reading these books at a very young age (2nd grade) I had my reservations. I read What's a Christian to do with Harry Potter to help me understand it a little better. I have a few friends that don't allow HP and then they don't trick or treat either. It really is what you read into it sometimes.

Hmmm....so far, I've only gotten around to reading the first 3 of the Harry Potter series...but my perspective from those 3, is that it is not so much about witchcraft, as about the MAGIC of Good prevailing over Evil. :dunno:

I've read the first 3 also...it gets much darker in the later books.

Interesting. I would have thought being orphaned & made to live in a closet by your abusive relatives or the idea of purebloods vs. mixed bloods would be more touchy subjects than having magical powers and how you reconcile that idea with Christian teachings.

Rowling: 'Dumbledore Is Gay'

At a public appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York, author J.K. Rowling announced that Dumbledore, the headmaster character in her popular Harry Potter series, is homosexual. What do you think?

Larry Hahn,

"Wow. I haven't heard that. I've been really busy lately not caring about the sexual preferences of fictional people."

Cathy Grodin,

"Dumbledore? I always figured the gay ones were Harry, Draco Malfoy, Hermione, Ron, Hagrid, Dudley Dursely, Ptolemy, Morgana, and Professor Snape."
