I had a really sad conversation with a teen who was never going to read the Harry Potter books- she told me that "real Christians" believe magic and witchcraft are sinful and evil. She made this statement as if the books were true stories and would really impact someone's faith! Just so sad to be that close-minded at such a young age.:sosad:

Oh, I don't care if Dumbledore is gay. I never had a reason to even think about his sexuality (did anybody think about it before this was mentioned?), and it totally doesn't matter.

That is so sad.

IMO whenever folks start claiming to be "real Christians" and making claims about what is sinful & evil they've missed the main point of the Bible's stories and Jesus' teachings .

Log in your eye, party of one!

I don't consider other people's sexuality my business unless I'm interested in them, so it's a non-issue for me aside from a media frenzy/amusement standpoint.

I've read all the books and never once wondered about Dumbledore, it just doesn't seem to matter at this point, as we all have been saying.

Several people in my church have read the books (some are veen pretty die hard fans!) and as a youth pastor's wife, I've wondered more than once if I should move the books from our very public, in plain view bookshelf in our living room, "just in case." Each time I wonder about it I don't do it and my husband agrees, there is no reason to put them away. The stories are well told and I imagine, when I have kids and they are a little older, they will probably read them. It's a personal choice and while I read the Bible and try as I might to follow after its teachings, in the grand scheme of things I think Harry Potter matters very little. Besides, people questioning why I read them could open up doors for deeper discussions, which is good.

What I've never understood is why people get upset about Harry Potter but don't get upset about Disney "glorifying witchcraft." Snow White comes to mind. I love the Harry Potter books. As a teacher, it's great to see kids get excited about reading. The later books do get a bit more mature and darker, but as I understand, the first book is meant to be read around 2nd or 3rd grade, then progress so the kids can read them as they grow up...if that makes any sense at all. So while the first book may be a good read for a third grader, later books are upper level and made to keep the interest of kids in that age group.
