I must be living in the woods, because I've never heard of this guy. I find it interesting that so many people are so saddened by someone dying when they know only the characters he plays in movies, and not the real guy. I'm not pointing fingers at you, as we all are in the same boat when it comes to most actors. We tend to connect with a character they portray, and like them based on the character, not the real person. Can you imagine your reaction to a local nobody, who had a little drug problem with Heroin? We'd probably put them down and kick em' around, or avoid them completely. Somehow, being a celebrity changes all of that.

Just an observation, not a criticism. ;-)

Is it the money and fame they earn that make it glossier? He probably was a hard worker. :dunno: Do ya'll think actors work hard? Either way, it's such a waste of life, and sad for his little gull. Sounds like he was tight with her. Seems like, he and Michelle, and that sweet baby should be happy in the country somewhere, like Britney and Kevin and their boys.:sosad: They are wasting away so much fuNN they could be havin', if they'd just put their minds to it. Too bad life can't be that simple. I feel :sosad: for the babies. God rest his young soul too.

I have no idea what an actor's work load is like, but I would think that the work would be consuming of much of one's time. I would certainly guess that it is hard work, if done well. I would also guess that the acting might be the easiest part, with the most difficult part being learning the character.

I was totally stunned when Gord called me yesterday to tell me of Heath's passing. He knows I'm a huge fan of is work.

I agree with SJ....it's strange that "we" have this uncanny ability to connect with the character an actor portrays rather than WHO that person truly is.

To me, it was his age...his talent...and the fact....the reminder that everything can change in the "blink of an eye". Events like this, always put a perspective on my life that I otherwise tend to forget.

We only have one life...this isn't a dress rehersal.

I had a friend lose her son last week to a heart attack. 41 years old, no prior signs of any heart disease...found him on the floor of his bedroom. And then with two other friends having heart issues recently....

We all need to take the care of ourselves...our bodies...more seriously.

You know, SJ, when I heard it on the radio yesterday I nearly wrecked--I was so stunned by it. But then I had the same line of thought you pointed to--I don't know him. I've never had lunch with him or sat next to him on the bus or talked to him on SoWal.com.

But I noticed when he played the Petruchio-like character in "10 Things I Hate About You." My drama class has talked about that movie 2 or 3 times in the last couple of weeks because it is loosely based on The Taming of the Shrew. And I watched his character closely in "The Patriot"--loved that movie. I enjoyed "A Knight's Tale." I've always been fascinated with his characters.

I'll miss his work, and I don't feel guilty about that. I still miss River Phoenix, for that matter...

And while I have the floor, I'll just say what a waste of human life it is. You mentioned how we would react to "the local nobody"'s death by overdose--I've always taken that seriously. "Less Than Zero" was on t.v. the other night--I remember seeing that shortly after it came out and it made me sick. I know that some folks will disagree, but to me it is deeply saddening to see a life--any life--wasted and ended because of drug abuse.
